Christmas is just around the corner and if you are the process of shopping for a new watch, maybe this round-up will come in handy as I’m highlighting some of the best hands-on and review pieces of the past two or so weeks.

We begin with two epic watches – one from a leading independent, and another from one of the biggest names in the business. I’m referring to Vianney Halter’s mega Deep Space Tourbillon watch and Rolex’s Submariner “Hulk” 116610LV. These two aside, there’s also IWC’s new Pilot’s Chronograph Top Gun Miramar watch, F.P. Journe’s exquisite Chronometre Bleu, and Fabergé’s whimsical Visionnaire DTZ watch. And to round things off, we’ll be examining the history and rise of Tudor, one of the most dynamic brands of the past few years. All this and more in this month’s round-up.

1. Vianney Halter Deep Space Tourbillon Watch Hands-On

Vianney Halter is one of my favorite independent watchmakers. Just google “Vianney Halter Antiqua” and “Harry Winston Opus 3” and you’ll see why. The two watches are unlike any other watches you will ever see and are the works of this man. The Star Trek-inspired Deep Space Tourbillon watch is one of Vianney’s latest creations, and there was a lot of excitement when it was first announced. The watch is, as you would expect, absolutely fantastic to behold. See the Deep Space Tourbillon close up because it’s like nothing else out there.

2. Rolex Submariner 116610LV In Green Watch Review

The Rolex Submariner is one of the most popular watches in the world. It may not be the most exciting or new watch to look at, but it is built like a tank, accurate, versatile, and it is made by arguably the biggest name in luxury watches. But if you want to stand out amongst the vast ocean of Submariner owners, then you may really want to look at the 116610LV, or more commonly known simply as the Submariner “Hulk” – especially if green is your favorite color. It is essentially the Submariner but with a green dial and green Cerachrom bezel, but boy, what a difference the color makes.

3. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Supersonnerie Tourbillon Chronograph Watch Hands-On

The minute repeater is widely considered to be one of the most difficult complications to master because there’s so many things to consider. First of all, there are all the moving parts, and then one also has to consider the sound it will make. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Supersonnerie Tourbillon Chronograph watch takes these two considerations to the forefront and was designed to be the ultimate minute repeating watch. The gongs and even the case had to be redesigned to allow Audemars Piguet to achieve its goal. And if that’s not enough, the watch also features a tourbillon and chronograph function. It all means that this is one of the most technically accomplished watches to come out in 2016.

4. IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Miramar Hands-On

At SIHH every year, IWC focuses on updating one of its collections. And for 2016, its very popular Pilot collection got a thorough update with numerous new models. One of the new models that we loved  is the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Miramar. It’s an update of the same model that was launched in 2012 and features a number of important changes. It’s smaller, which makes it more versatile and comfortable to wear. It also has a new movement and a reworked dial layout. All things considered, these are much-welcomed changes that should make the watch more appealing to a larger audience.

5. Fabergé Visionnaire DTZ Watch Hands-On

Mention Fabergé and you are probably thinking about the jewelry eggs that were  made specially for the Russian tzars. You would be right, but the brand is actually alive and well today, and they have an ambitious plan for making watches. To put their plan into action, they have turned to none other than Jean-Marc Widerrecht of Agenhor – the same man who helped develop pieces such as the HM2 and HM3 from MB&F, and the Harry Winston Opus 9. The end result is the very unique Visionnaire DTZ watch, a dual time zone watch that is unlike any other. See if you can tell where the second time zone indicator is from the picture above.

6. Angelus U20 Ultra-Skeleton Tourbillon Watch Hands-On

As you may know, Angelus is a recently revived brand owned by the La Joux-Perret umbrella, which is in turned owned by Japanese watch giant Citizen. Though Angelus is more well-known for its chronograph and its association with Panerai, the Angelus of today is a completely different animal. This is evident in its new U20 Ultra-Skeleton Tourbillon watch. Like its debut piece, the U10 Lumiere, the U20 Ultra-Skeleton Tourbillon watch is thoroughly modern in its execution, and its level of skeletonization has to be seen up close to be appreciated.
