Cartier’s $510,000 Rotonde Grande Complication Skeleton Watch

Cartiers $510,000 Rotonde Grande Complication Skeleton Watch cartier

Well this sure isn't your everyday Cartier. Limited to 30 pieces, this platinum-cased watch comes with a retail price of $510,000. Yeah, that's right. This Cartier watch will set you back a half million dollars. The movement is made by Renaud & Papi (APRP). I got to see the movements being put together at the factory. You can also see some shots of the completed watch as well. The movement has a perpetual calendar, tourbillon, and monopusher chronograph. Seem like a lot of money? Well it is... but don't forget that Cartier brand premium.

Wrist shot of it looks lovely, however the front view is not so kind as has been said it's not the easiest to read, the background looks like spaghetti junction and the crown looks far to big for me. Now the good points, yes like the fact the tourbillon is not gold and the rear of the watch is indeed pretty, overall though as DR said better off with a Gruebel & Forsey or if it has to be a Cartier why not the much cheaper and better looking Calibre de Cartier.

It's very nice, but nowhere near $500k nice. I like the palette, the all-steel colour movement is a nice compliment to the platinum (I appreciate that they didnt feel the need to have a gold tourbillon, or blued screws, etc), but it's not very easy to read. Looks to me like it apparently costs 6-figures to have your watch say Cartier on it. The crown is the best part, with the applied nubs and the (onyx?) cabochon. Should I ever have a half million bucks to toss areound on time pieces, I'd certainly buy a collection of VERY nice pieces, not a single unit that, for the price, seems to be lacking the ability to provide me with superhuman powers.

I would have to sell my soul to afford that kind of a watch and I just might do it. Hah!

It's unbelievable.

You'll need to count me out on this one. First the price, but then for the price, this is a terribly unattractive watch. It's barely decorated compared to an A Lange & Sohne or any number of other fine watches. The various sub dials in what looks to be plain black text on white are adequate but unlovely. For a half-million dollars, I demand to be completely gobsmacked by the beauty. The tourbillon bridge is clumsy and unfortunately large. For less money, give me a Gruebel & Forsey or almost anything. Cancel my order immediately! :)

The back of the watch is nice...

Now, this is the Cartier watch they should've put on the cover of October issue of Watch Time, instead of a "pedestrian" $35.K chrono ;) (Kind of makes Omega Speedmaster Apollo-Soyuz 35th Anniversary model that I have my eye on (but can't rationalize paying $7K for Speedmaster) look like an Invicta) Ariel -- am I correct in thinking that such ultra-pricey limited edition watches are made to order?

Many watches like this are made to order, but I saw a lot of them being put together, which means that Cartier is likely interested in producing at least most of them right off the bat.
