When you think of Zenith watches, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? It’s very likely the term “El Primero,” as that’s been one of the most famous movement (and product lines) in their history. And frankly, after my first exposure to the El Primero, in the form of today’s review piece, I can certainly see why. With it, you get classic styling combined with some very nice functionality, courtesy of the complications included in the movement.

Hot on the heels of the incredibly cool El Primero Lightweight, Zenith has launched another limited edition El Primero, dubbed the 410 LE. The 410 is based on a very rare vintage El Primero model from the 70′s that looked almost identical, save for the original model’s smaller 38 mm case.
One of the coolest new Zenith watches for 2013 is the Type 20 Annual Calendar that is part of the expanded Pilot Monte d’Aeronef collection. It combines a wonderful movement and a slick retro sport style that is hard to beat when combined with Zenith’s quality attention to detail.
The new high-tech Zenith El Primero Lightweight offers a number of cutting edge enhancements all made in the name of saving weight. With a movement crafted from silicon and titanium and a case in carbon and aluminum, this is essentially the El Primero Superleggera.
For over a decade now, Zenith’s El Primero 4021 movement have been beating inside their Chronomaster line of watches. Much like Zenith itself, this collection had its ups and downs only to finally become stronger and more appealing than ever. Now we are looking at a very exclusive version of the Chronomaster Power Reserve model: a limited edition of only 10 pieces.
For 2013 Zenith follows the blue road to release a blue-dialed version of the already well regarded El Primero Stratos Flyback Watch. We first debuted the Zenith Stratos watch when it originally came out in 2011. 2013 sees a lot of blue watches, something that I personally have no problem with as a nice blue sports watch can look fantastic.
2013 will see the debut of a new version of the famed Zenith Rainbow as a limited edition. It will be a version of the lovely Zenith Stratos, and we have an early hands-on look. The official name of the watch is the Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Rainbow Boutique Edition watch, and it will be limited to only 250 pieces. The cult classic Rainbow aviation watch began life in the 1990s with the 40mm wide Zenith El Primero Rainbow Flyback.
As part of Zenith’s focus on their Pilot watch collection for 2013, one of the new models is this Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20 GMT watch. Also new for 2013 is the Zenith Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20 Annual Calendar. Both the Annual Calendar and the GMT use existing Zenith movements. In fact, we see very little new movements these days from the major brands.
2013 will see a number of additions to the Zenith Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20 watch collection that started last year with mega 57.5mm wide Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20 that included a rather amazing recreation of a competition movement. Never intended as a serious collection, the popularity of the Montre d’Aéronef Type 20 likely spurred enough noise that Zenith CEO Jean-Frederic Dufour decided to expand on the range.
With 2012 behind us we are trying to find stuff from last year that we forgot to cover. Not because it wasn’t cool, but you know, because we get busy. I was sad to find that I neglected to cover the Pilot Doublematic watch from Zenith – I even had some hands-on time with it.
In addition to a slew of many other salivation-worthy watches, 2013 greets us with this new version of the well-known and pretty darn cool Zenith Christophe Colomb.
The Academy collection from Zenith is back with more introducing this new Academy El Primero Minute Repeater Chronograph. This is a very high-end and exclusive version of the Zenith Elite design family which the model lives in.
This Zenith timepiece isn’t normally the type of thing you’d guess a watch collector would wear, but that is exactly who this new limited edition Zenith Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20 watch was produced for. 2012 has Zenith focusing on their heritage as a pilot watch maker. The grandest example of that is this rather huge […]
As a unique collaboration with the MIH (the Musée International d’Horlogerie), Zenith introduces a great new member of their Captain family of watches. With a base in-house made El Primero Chronograph movement, Zenith and the MIH have developed a special new module that adds a very legible and practical annual calendar complication to the mix. […]
Have you seen a cleaner looking classy GMT? I don’t think I have. Especially one that is so simple to read and operate. This is the new Zenith Captain Dual Time watch from the brand’s Elite movement collection. Elite movements are a little step down from El Primero movements – but also made in-house by […]
Zenith watches really get around – especially on the wrist of Johan Ernst Nilson. A Zenith brand ambassador, Nilson is a modern day explorer who has been going on “expeditions” for about 20 years. Now in his early 40s, Nilson is in the middle of a serious journey called the Pole2Pole adventure. The trip is […]
