Inside the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillon Aventurine is the Jaquet Droz exclusive caliber 25JD automatic tourbillon, with an 18k white gold and aventurine rotor. Jaquet Droz doesn’t produce their own movements in-house, but via resources afforded to them by parent company The Swatch Group, they have a lot of nice exclusive movements produced for their timepieces. The 25JD operates at 3Hz (21,600 bph) and has a rather long power reserve of seven days. One special feature about the tourbillon is how it is mounted.

What you see isn’t a flying tourbillon, even though it sort of looks like one. It is rather a normal tourbillon with a top bridge produce from transparent sapphire crystal. This affords the wearer a very clear view of the spinning tourbillon-style regulation system, with the stability of a mounted tourbillon.

The Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillon Aventurine case has 1.47 carats of stones (260 indivdiual diamonds) to decorate it, along with another 0.14 carats (90 diamonds) on the dial. That isn’t super diamond-intensive, but you sure feel like it is, given the price of the watch. The diamond decor doesn’t feel as feminine as on some watches I have seen, but I am still on the fence as to whether or not I would choose to wear this watch (despite it being really beautiful).

Attached to the case is one of Jaquet Droz’s most excellent rolled alligator straps in a deep blue to match the aventurine on the dial. What I really like about the rolled leather look is that there is no stitching on the surface, which I happen to not like in many instances – especially on more formal or dress watches. Limited to just 28 pieces, I am rather fond of the pretty looks of the ref. J013014270 Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillon Aventurine watch. My only remaining question is whether or not it would find a place on my wrist… and to that I said “perhaps on the right night and under the right sky” (wow, that came out so French!). Price is $115,400. jaquet-droz.com
