Time. We share it. We cherish it. We lose track of it. We waste it; fear it; curse it; there’s never enough of it. It’s the definitive point of reference since the dawn of… time. What is the time? Where am I within the progress of the day? We get caught up in time; worry about the seconds whizzing by; the minutes we have left to wait; the hours we’ve lost. There’s no objectivity. The OPTIK INSTRUMENTS HORIZON displays all 24 hours of your day in full. The light hours. The dark hours. Early morning and Evening. The horizon between day and night. OPTIK INSTRUMENTS, a new and innovative British design house, is set to launch the HORIZON on Kickstarter on Tuesday February 27th, 2018.

Simple & Effective

The HORIZON doesn’t display the time second by second, or even minute by minute. Instead, it shows the main way-points in each hour; quarter past, half-past, and quarter-to the hour. We already use the terminology to convey the time to others, such as “it’s just gone half-past” or “it’s almost midday.” OPTIK INSTRUMENTS translates this shorthand method to a wristwatch.

The HORIZON is quite striking to look at. It appears counter-intuitive. However, with one sentence, it’s immediately understood and what’s more, intuitive, engaging, and simple.

The central disc rotates once in 24 hours and the time is referenced at the red line.

That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less.

What is clever about the HORIZON design is that the more you use it, the more accustomed you get to the position of the disc during a day. Over time you will be able to tell the time at a glance, just by looking at the angle of the horizon.

The HORIZON can be read in any of three ways depending on how accurately you need the time; the first is broadly using the angle of the horizon. The second is using the main way-points to more closely read the time – main hours and the half-hour dots. The last is using all the reference markings to gauge more precisely what the time is.

The HORIZON was designed to be recognizable as an OPTIK INSTRUMENT immediately – there’s nothing else like it. The disc design is the most prominent part of the HORIZON and it should be – function before form. However, the supporting parts are equally as important and the OPTIK team have spent over a year refining the design to perfection.

It’s Up To You

We are all individual creatures, each with our own way of doing things. When designing the HORIZON the OPTIK team wanted to offer as much personalization as possible. By using symmetry and simplicity, the HORIZON can be worn on either wrist with the crown facing towards or away from the wrist. You can use either color of the disc as day or night and, if you so prefer, use the time-zone lines as your time reference. You can even use the red reference line at the bottom or top of the disc. It’s all completely up to you.

Fit For Purpose

Designing new things leads to asking new questions. The HORIZON is the first of its kind to use a single rotating disc as the method of telling the time. To make sure the disc design was a benefit, rather than a hindrance, the disc was designed and tested thoroughly for weight, balance, and shock protection, with the movement tested for accuracy, deviation, and longevity.

After extensive and thorough testing the HORIZON not only fell within manufacturer specifications, but of the 5 modules tested, in multiple positions, all were accurate to within 6 seconds per month. The HORIZON isn’t about accuracy, but it’s reassuring to know there is a reliable Swiss beat keeping things moving consistently along.

Each HORIZON will be engraved with a unique serial number, presented in a specially designed case, and paired with a celebration booklet. OPTIK INSTRUMENTS offer a substantial five-year warranty for this collection. The timepiece is also water-resistant up to 100m to ensure the requirements of modern life don’t get in the way of your day-to-day routine.

The HORIZON campaign will go live on Kickstarter on Tuesday February 27th, 2018. Set your alarms; mark your calendars; shout from the rooftops. The early bird catches the worm.

For launch on Kickstarter the HORIZON will be offered in a limited number at £199. The HORIZON comes in four distinct versions: Flagship, Billet, Navigator, and Tech. For more information visit the official site. optikinstruments.com
