All-black and delightfully “mean”, the Breitling Super Avenger Military is a rare example of a 24 hour watch. In the United States we refer to 24 hour format time as military time. That is because here it is primarily the military that uses this format while civilians use a 12 hour format. We are partial to our AMs and PMs. Many who live or travel outside of the US know the the 24 hour format is used heavily all over the world for a range of purposes from television schedules to movie times.

When you think of Zenith watches, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? It’s very likely the term “El Primero,” as that’s been one of the most famous movement (and product lines) in their history. And frankly, after my first exposure to the El Primero, in the form of today’s review piece, I can certainly see why. With it, you get classic styling combined with some very nice functionality, courtesy of the complications included in the movement.
You may be asking yourself, “what is an ExoTourbillon and what can it do for me?” Aside from making you feel younger and more virile, an ExoTourbillon is a unique and rare species of tourbillon found in the small Swiss mountain town of Villeret. There you’ll find Montblanc’s Villeret factory formerly known as Minerva.
An easy watch for IWC lovers to enjoy is this new model in the Ingenieur collection that incorporates a lot of what we enjoy about the brand. This may be the first time, or among the few times that IWC has used its rattrapante movement in an Ingenieur piece. Rattrapante is a fancy name for split second chronograph, or as IWC refers to it in this watch, a “Double Chronograph.”
Allow us to take this opportunity to not just review a unique version of the TAG Heuer Monaco, but also to review the collection as a whole. The Monaco is one of TAG Heuer’s most famous watch families, sporting a cushion/square case which was originally debuted in 1969 – an important year for watch making, and an important year for Heuer.
When a brand such as Baume & Mercier says they’re digging into their archives for new watches, you can’t be quite sure what you might see. As one of the seven oldest watch brands, they’ve got quite an assortment of inspiration to draw from. This latest batch of vintage-inspired pieces will expand the Clifton collection that we saw introduced earlier this year.
Bulgari’s Bulgari-Bulgari is one of their most iconic designs, and for 2013 has received a deserved update. The history of the Bulgari Bulgari (Bvlgari Bvlgari) is over 35 years old and once again begins with Mr. Gerald Genta. The late watch designer is responsible for perhaps too many of today’s top luxury watch icons.
Live from Switzerland, the show returns to discuss John’s new mistress named Eleven James (she makes house calls) and what is brewing over at TAG Heuer and what is up with their new Calibre 1969 movement. We also discuss Panerai, and where we’ve been all your lives…
It’s November in the Jura region of Switzerland in a small town none of us have heard of called Chevenez. It begins to snow outside as we tour the modern black and white colored grounds of TAG Heuer’s newest facility known as the d’Avant-Garde Manufacture. Recently completed, the new manufacturing site began recently in 2012. Now that it is done, the location will be the epicenter of TAG Heuer mechanical chronograph movement production including the just announced Calibre 1969.
Not long after the introduction of their latest ProTrek flagship, the PRW3000, Casio has announced a new entry-level model that also features the updated Triple Sensor V3 technology.
Girard-Perregaux is about to release a new version of the still new Chrono Hawk called the Hollywoodland. An unofficial homage to the movie making capital of the world, the Chrono Hawk Hollywoodland is the latest effort in the brand’s focus on entering the world of Hollywood. In 2012 Girard-Perregaux announced that it was going to be a sponsor and founding supporter of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures…
Torsten Nagengast is a German-born timepiece enthusiast who has crossed the line. And by “crossed the line,” I mean took the final step a watch enthusiast can take: from collecting fine timepieces to crafting them himself. Already lauded for his work on handmade projects featuring “reclaimed” historical movements as well as an impressive one-off Unique Repeater in 18K with diamonds, Nagengast is now preparing to launch his next timepiece
Hot on the heels of the incredibly cool El Primero Lightweight, Zenith has launched another limited edition El Primero, dubbed the 410 LE. The 410 is based on a very rare vintage El Primero model from the 70′s that looked almost identical, save for the original model’s smaller 38 mm case.
Having reviewed and gushed over an A. Lange & Sohne timepiece this past spring (the Saxonia Annual Calendar in platinum), I jumped at the chance to join the brand in Napa Valley when I received an invite to their Akademie program in early September. Knowing that Ariel had attended the Akademie a few years back, I was interested in experiencing the immersive program for myself.
In 2012 Fortis released this lovely “Vintage” edition of the Marinemaster. It troubles me a bit when brands use the term “vintage” as applied to a new watch. Is it just me or does that cause unnecessary confusion? What for example do you call the actual original Fortis Marinemaster that this timepiece is based on, the “actual Marinemaster Vintage?”
One of the coolest new Zenith watches for 2013 is the Type 20 Annual Calendar that is part of the expanded Pilot Monte d’Aeronef collection. It combines a wonderful movement and a slick retro sport style that is hard to beat when combined with Zenith’s quality attention to detail.
