For 2013, the aBlogtoWatch watch gift guide will take the form of an editor’s and contributor’s wish list. Some of the editorial team has gone ahead and chosen a few of the timepieces from last year that are really high on their list. These are mostly newer watches, but ones that should be available for purchase now. So for this holiday season you’ll get a good idea of what we’ve personally wanted, and we didn’t include crazy stuff that no one can get, even if they could afford it.

An easy watch for IWC lovers to enjoy is this new model in the Ingenieur collection that incorporates a lot of what we enjoy about the brand. This may be the first time, or among the few times that IWC has used its rattrapante movement in an Ingenieur piece. Rattrapante is a fancy name for split second chronograph, or as IWC refers to it in this watch, a “Double Chronograph.”
Lest you think that this is some tenuous tie-in to the most recent future monarch born in the UK, just note that the two watches IWC has released to commemorate “The Little Prince” are actually a tie-in to literature…
IWC Schaffhausen just recently released their third new model in the Portuguese lineup, a line that looks to combine the love of travel and adventure with classic, elegant style. The latest model leaves no guesswork as to two of the major features – it’s called the Hand-Wound Eight Days.
Major auctioneer Christie’s is currently running their first ever “online-only auction,” “The Essential Watch Collection” These days, we’re all accustomed to researching watches online, and then, very likely also buying them online. Major auctioneers have for a long time been trying to get a piece of the “eBay pie,” and the plan is to approach the sale of vintage watches online by offering a curated, safe environment where watches are vetted by professionals and available through a trusted source…
The second most expensive new IWC Ingenieur watch for 2013, and my favorite new model in the series, is this Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month ref 3792 (IW379201). Despite the model’s tongue-twister name it leaves out the fact that it also has a chronograph. Visually stunning and extremely masculine, this is the type of forward-thinking modern design that I like to see in a luxury sport-themed timepiece.
…contributed by legendary watchmaker, Peter Roberts, of England: It is 1969 and the streets of London are still swinging. As a young horology student, at Hackney Technical College, I am wondering where I will be able to get my hands on some top quality watches for practice. Surprisingly, owners of fine watches are not willing to risk their precious timepieces to an impecunious, novice watchmaker like myself…
Panerai, love it or hate it, it’s one of the hottest brands around and we check out its new tourbillon pocket watch and the story of how it became a manufacture in such a short time. We also review IWC’s new Portuguese chronograph as well as Chanel’s very dressy J12 Chromatic dive watch.
One of the most modern IWC Portuguese watches actually has the term “Classic” in its name which is a very Swiss way of introducing a new timepiece. 2013 saw the introduction of this Portuguese Chronograph Classic, that added a new “in-house” flavor to the iconic Portuguese collection. It was a quiet launch after SIHH…
Most wristwatches made today are hardly state-of-the-art, but rather continue a tradition of watch making set in motion long ago. One reason many collectors are interested in vintage watches is because many of them represent important achievements in technology and functionality that we take for granted today.
On June 14th at the IWC Boutique at the South Coast Plaza mall in Costa Mesa, CA I will be hosting a “Meet The Watchmaker” Event with IWC where you can come view IWC watches, speak with me, and of course meet a watchmaker from IWC’s manufacture in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
At SIHH this past January, IWC released their new Ingenieur collection, featuring over a dozen new timepieces from the revamped line. While most press attention from the collection focused on the in-house calibers, casing materials and range of complications in the new 46mm models
In the second edition of our bi-weekly news roundup, we check out the new MB&F HM3 Megawind, explore the science being black watches, learn about an indestructible Omega watch and check out previews of two watches that will debut at Basel World 2013.
From a marketing perspective IWC has been dedicating each year to a particular watch collection. 2013 is all about the Ingenieur, but again, that is just from a marketing and PR perspective. There is more on the IWC plate. Another new release for 2013 is rather important for fans of the Portuguese collection. Updated and arguably more sporty than ever, this is the best Portuguese chronograph watch to date.
If you look at many of the most popular watch brands, you’ll notice that their collections usually contain a few (or many) classics whose names have been around for years. Brands like Rolex don’t really release new models, but rather continue to improve on their core collection over time.
Perhaps IWC’s new 40mm wide Ingenieur dress watch was the most talked about new Ingenieur piece for 2013, but for those who like larger sport watches these more simple-dialed Ingenieur pieces will fit the bill. Whether it is a phase or just because I like loud watches, I fully appreciate smaller dress watches, but simply have so little time in my life to wear them.
