We’re here at BaselWorld 2013 and Rolex has shown off a couple of new model iterations, including a platinum Daytona and this black and blue colored GMT-Master II. Essentially just a new color variation of the current GMT-Master II range, this new version employs a two color cerachrom bezel insert (a first for Rolex) in a day/night arrangement of blue and black.

As Old Ben Kenobi said while bequeathing to Luke his new lightsaber, “An elegant weapon, for a more civilized age”. Had he been handing over his old man’s wristwatch instead of a futures-past laser sword, a single word need only have been changed to properly describe it. That is, of course, if the timepiece he was handing down was the incredible A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Annual Calender with Moonphase in Platinum.
Pretty much any timepiece from Parmigiani Fleurier that has the term “Toric” in the title is going to be spectacular. This watch is the Toric Quaestor Labyrinthe (that I will refer to as merely “Labyrinthe”), a limited edition of five piece set for 2013. These pieces rank toward the top of the Parmigiani wrist watch ladder.
Badollet is a brand that is not very well-known but has been quietly gaining recognition for this particular piece, the Ivresse, which I had a chance to see being made at their atelier in La Vallée de Joux near Geneva.
Ulysse Nardin was an early proponent of modern celestial watches. In the 1990s the brand produced and pushed their Planetarium trilogy of watches that solely sought to reproduce in timepiece form unique devices meant to track and display the various cycles of the sky.
SIHH is in full swing and A. Lange and Sohne is not pulling any punches. ALS has announced the new 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar, and it looks to be a complete knockout. Featuring a new Lange calibre, the L.101.1, the 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar combines…
For 2013 one of the limited edition A. Lange & Sohne watches will be this neat looking and very high-end Grand Lange 1 Lumen timepiece. The piece is a mix of a few ideas that Lange has offered over the years.
As famed Formula 1 race car driver Michael Schumacher announced his retirement, Audemars Piguet also announced his new limited edition watch. A few days ago I debuted the Royal Oak Offshore Michael Schumacher Limited Edition watch here via Forbes.
These two jumping hour watches from Bell & Ross represent their most high-end timepieces for 2012. In the past, Bell & Ross has offered a few other jumping hour pieces – a style and complication that the brand executes very well. Called the WW1 Heure Sautante (Jumping Hour), Bell & Ross didn’t want to just [...]
These two watches are interesting limited edition Royal Oak watches done in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Royal Oak collection. While not the only limited edition models for 2012, these are the two skeletonized versions and each come in platinum cases – a bit ironic to celebrate the famous high-end steel watch. Audemars [...]
The perpetual calendar complication has been a fascinating and useful feature on high-end watches for quite sometime. Calendar functions directly related to keeping the time, and offer a variety of information related to the 24 hour cycle. Most watches have just the date, and the more complex you get, the more calendar functions you can [...]
Well this sure isn’t your everyday Cartier. Limited to 30 pieces, this platinum-cased watch comes with a retail price of $510,000. Yeah, that’s right. This Cartier watch will set you back a half million dollars. The movement is made by Renaud & Papi (APRP). I got to see the movements being put together at the [...]
In platinum, the watch case and dial of this Greubel Forsey Tourbillon 24 Secondes (yes, spelled like that) watch feel as though they were milled from a solid piece of the precious metal. There is so much platinum in this watch – it boggles the mind. Actually, the the dial, markers, and hands are in [...]
Back in March I wrote about my experience hanging out on the IWC Plastiki with its crew in San Francisco. This was prior to the ship’s maiden voyage, which was to be an ambitious journey from San Francisco to Sydney. Please refer to the original article there for all the details on what the Plastiki [...]
New this year from H. Moser & Cie is the high-end Moser Perpetual Moon watch. Perfect for people who love the look of H. Moser & Cie watches, and want a moon phase complication. Here the interesting stuff is in the fact that the moon phase indicator doesn’t need to be adjusted for 1000 years, [...]
An oddity in the watch world are watch brands who bear the names of actual living watch makers, but who no longer have anything to do with the watch makers themselves. What makes it most interesting is that there never seems to be a lot of positivity about this. Meaning that the men whose names [...]
