It is December and that means it is the season of giving once more. To help plan your Christmas shopping, we will be taking a look at a couple of gift guides and wish lists. We also check out new watches from Arnold & Son and Omega, and also learn more about the history of ETA, and round off by visiting Salon QP…

Seiko once again teases the world with another Japan-only, high-end watch that they released over the summer (June) in Japan as a very small limited edition. This is a pretty lovely model and is a rare glimpse into Seiko corporate culture as well as humor.
Until the 1950s, the wristwatch world was powered by springs… Winding one’s watch was part of daily routine, as was adjusting it regularly to keep it accurate. But 1957 heralded change and the beginnings of a revolution that would fully materialize in the 1970s and 80s, and it all started with the futuristic-sounding, electric watch…
We round off October by paying A. Lange & Söhne a visit, finding out what is Francois-Paul Journe’s grail watch, learning more about Seiko, and checking out new watches from Girard Perregaux, Harry Winston, Panerai and Nomos.
Rounding off September, we check out new watches from Omega, Arnold & Son and the Beijing Watch Factory. We also find out more about what makes Richard Mille tick, watch modifications, and also pay a visit to the annual Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair.
Panerai, love it or hate it, it’s one of the hottest brands around and we check out its new tourbillon pocket watch and the story of how it became a manufacture in such a short time. We also review IWC’s new Portuguese chronograph as well as Chanel’s very dressy J12 Chromatic dive watch.
In 1983 Seiko began a design partnership with Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro that resulted in the production of a few very interesting pieces in the mid 1980s. For 2013 Seiko has begun a re-issue of these timepieces starting with the first model – the Seiko 7A28 6000. Guigiaro is most well-known for his automotive designs, including that of the famous DeLorean DMC-12.
Most wristwatches made today are hardly state-of-the-art, but rather continue a tradition of watch making set in motion long ago. One reason many collectors are interested in vintage watches is because many of them represent important achievements in technology and functionality that we take for granted today.
While I’m far from the first to say it, Grand Seiko remains a true oasis of watchnerdery, a special arm within Seiko that seems to exist just to pose the question “is this the best we can do?” Grand Seiko is more than just the Lexus to Seiko’s Toyota.
In the fifth edition of our bi-weekly roundup, we check out Patek Philippe’s new Sky Moon tourbillon watch, the latest Vianney Halter masterpiece, learn about Rolex’s history, find out the truth of replica watches, take a look at Seiko high beat movements and take a lesson on the care and feeding about mechanical watches.
John is in Iceland but we still manage to stay warm with watches. We discuss the innovating yet perhaps futile Urwerk EMC movement, and the easily lovable Seiko Prospex Tuna with the Spring Drive movement. We also cover Montegrappa’s new Chaos watch (you’ll either hate it or love it), and the nice looking new Hamilton Khaki Pilot Pioneer Auto Chrono.
The Prospex line of professional divers from Seiko has long been a rich source of fine watches and superb engineering, sadly less known than they deserve due to Japan-only sales. This one is worth questing for, though, it’s the new-for-2013 SBDB008. SpringDrive (cal 5R65), DLC titanium shroud, titanium nitride (the gold colored bits) highlights, date window tucked in at 4:30, and a new hand set.
Be it space or spaceship, the watches below are some of the coolest modern watches which honor or make actual use of elements far from the Earth. Imaginative watchmakers use meteorite dials or design their cases and movements to look like spaceships. We love this stuff and as traditional as watchmaking is, these timepieces are directly inspired by science and science fiction…
In the third edition of our bi-weekly roundup, we take a look at the some of my favorite watches from Baselworld 2013, which includes Hublot, Patek Philippe and Tag Heur. We also check out an interview with Laurent Picciotto of Chronopassion and find out how one can share his/her love of watches with their partners.
Want to dive deep into the minutia of an often over-looked Seiko diver? The Seiko SBDC007 (aka the Shogun) is yet another JDM model that you likely won’t see in any North American stores.
The watch was a Seiko SKX009 diver and was on his wrist for at least the entirety of the early 1990s Gulf War. According to the letter and many images from the time, General Schwarzkopf indeed “double wristed it” with a watch on each wrist.
