You may be asking yourself, “what is an ExoTourbillon and what can it do for me?” Aside from making you feel younger and more virile, an ExoTourbillon is a unique and rare species of tourbillon found in the small Swiss mountain town of Villeret. There you’ll find Montblanc’s Villeret factory formerly known as Minerva.

An easy watch for IWC lovers to enjoy is this new model in the Ingenieur collection that incorporates a lot of what we enjoy about the brand. This may be the first time, or among the few times that IWC has used its rattrapante movement in an Ingenieur piece. Rattrapante is a fancy name for split second chronograph, or as IWC refers to it in this watch, a “Double Chronograph.”
While Van Cleef & Arpels is mostly focused on products for women, they do have some men’s watches. They’ve actually had more in the past, but as of a few years ago they did indicate to me that more men’s watches would be part of their future. As promised, Van Cleef & Arpels relaunched the Pierre Arpels collection last year (hands-on here), and this year they’ve added to the collection with an interesting new bracelet…
The nickname of this highly exclusive Richard Mille watch is “Mark of the Beast.” It refers to Olympic runner Yohan Blake’s track name which is “The Beast,” given to him as he sprints with his fists open as though brandishing claws. Blake is also a Richard Mille brand ambassador, the latest in a line of athletes that Richard Mille has forced to wear delicate expensive watches while they perform.
The second most expensive new IWC Ingenieur watch for 2013, and my favorite new model in the series, is this Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month ref 3792 (IW379201). Despite the model’s tongue-twister name it leaves out the fact that it also has a chronograph. Visually stunning and extremely masculine, this is the type of forward-thinking modern design that I like to see in a luxury sport-themed timepiece.
The color gray needs more respect in the world of watches. People like to use terms like “silver, metal, steel, titanium, etc…” when describing colors, when what they are really talking about is a form of gray. Gray is also a very fashionably diverse hue, as it goes with just about everything.
Hands-on look at the Rotonde de Cartier Flying Tourbillon Crocodile Motif watch with an agate dial…
In the Ralph Lauren Safari watch collection comes the RL67 Tourbillon (RLR0220704), a fashion piece for fashion sport. The notion of a “Safari Tourbillon” is an ironic concept borne only of the luxury watch industry. Then again, the Land Rover started as a more or less “safari truck” and is now a play thing of rappers and rich soccer moms.
You are looking at what I believe is the very first Greubel Forsey timepiece released without a tourbillon. For a brand so focused on producing timepieces with multiple tourbillons, and tourbillons within tourbillons, it oddly shocked me to see a Greubel Forsey timepiece lacking what I felt was their iconic complication…
The stand-out collector’s (wealthy collector) Piaget watch for 2013 is the Emperador Coussin XL Ultra-Thin Minute Repeater (that we debuted here). In our previous article on the watch we discussed most of the technical specs and we won’t repeat all of those here. This post is about hands-on with the slim and formal minute repeater – a continuation of Piaget’s quest to offer as complete a family of ultra-thin watches as possible.
If there is anything that this industry has done to me, it is give me an incredibly skewed perception of wealth. I’ve lately realized that I have a very poor notion of “affordable” and “normal.” When you notice that an entry level mechanical timepiece that you’d hesitantly give to your father hoping he wouldn’t think it is too simple…
If there was such a thing as a ‘pedestrian watch’ at A. Lange & Sohne then it would surely be one of their “more basic” watches priced under $50,000 like this 1815 Up/Down. Anything over that simply could not be considered “ordinary.” There of course is jest in my words as A. Lange & Sonhe is among the most exclusive high-end brands in the world that given their volume…
Panerai is an often polarizing brand that has, in recent years, has seen a massive spike in popularity and has become a somewhat household name in men’s luxury wrist watches. Now often included in the brands that your non-watchnerd friends are aware of, they hold rank in upscale jewellery boutiques alongside Breitling and Rolex. Personally, I have loved the Panerai Radiomir as long as I have loved watches but both the price and the case size has often been too much for my reality. While SIHH saw quite a few new models from Panerai, none were as intriguing to me as the Luminor 1950 Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Titanio (PAM00526).
At SIHH this past January, IWC released their new Ingenieur collection, featuring over a dozen new timepieces from the revamped line. While most press attention from the collection focused on the in-house calibers, casing materials and range of complications in the new 46mm models
Not one to let SIHH’s spotlight simply pass them by, Richard Mille announced a limited edition model called the RM 58-01 Tourbillon World Timer Jean Todt Limited Edition. That rather long name suggests a lot about the watch but may leave some people questioning – who is Jean Todt? Jean Todt is the current President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and has been a notable figure in international professional racing for many years.
The term “mystery” (whether in English or French) as applied to a clock or watch means that some part of its mechanism or operation is hidden from the user. In this case it means that you can’t immediately see how the hands are attached.
