Grieb & Benzinger themselves personally shared with me that they never though they would make a watch quite like this. Called the Area 51, this absolute unique timepiece borne of hand-decoration and fantastic German artistic skills is about space aliens. Oh, and we’d like to have a little “caption contest” with you readers.

When you think of watches associated with space (and space programs), it probably calls to mind the Omega Speedmaster, or perhaps the Poljot Strela. Did you know that Breitling also has a watch associated with the great space race of the mid-20th century? It did, and Breitling is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the watch’s flight into space with the Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute Blacksteel.
The Tourbillon Orrery by Swiss Graham was among the more unique watches we were lucky to see at Baselworld 2013. Graham vacillates between producing bold sport watches and classic timepieces often with an astronomical component. The Swiss brand’s namesake is George Graham, an well-regarded British horologist who was instrumental in many innovations and achievements, especially when it came to astronomical timekeeping and measuring.
The Omega Speedmaster Spacemaster Z-33 watch is the thematic follow-up to the famed Omega X-33 pilot watch, that we recently discussed again as it was worn (and loved) by Astronaut Chris Hadfield (now apparently retired). The X-33 was originally released in 1998, mostly intended toward the professional and active enthusiast market as a sort of Omega answer…
The Moon Orbiter watch is completely out of this world and that is just how Romain Jerome likes it. I was sitting with Romain Jerome’s CEO recently in Las Vegas while we sipped on drinks as we was going through the final testing of the Moon Orbiter whilst wearing it on his wrist.
Vianney Halter gained famed for his unorthodox design and arguable creation of the high-end steampunk watch market. A known science fiction junkie, Halter’s mixed reputation in the watch industry ranges from positive concerning his vision, to negative concerning his follow-through in “completing” his work.
Be it space or spaceship, the watches below are some of the coolest modern watches which honor or make actual use of elements far from the Earth. Imaginative watchmakers use meteorite dials or design their cases and movements to look like spaceships. We love this stuff and as traditional as watchmaking is, these timepieces are directly inspired by science and science fiction…
He loves his Omega watch as much as he loves space! A few days ago Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield returned to earth after what seemed like an extremely long stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS). He was up there for six months!
A simple evolution, the Omega Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph Dark Side Of the Moon (debuted here) proves remarkably lovable on the wrist. In a glossy black ceramic case with matching black ceramic dial, the “Moonwatch” naturally borrowed the name “Dark Side Of The Moon” from such things as the actual dark side of earth’s moon, and Pink Floyd’s famous album.
MB&F releases their first non time-telling creation with the MusicMachine music box style desk piece. Produced in partnership with Reuge, the last high-end music box maker in Switzerland, the MusicMachine is an auditory journey through the inspirations that MB&F founder Max Busser uses when conceiving MB&F watches.
This watch is the Romain Jerome Space Craft and like most things traveling in space it is a lone object which arrived from a mysterious place.
A few years ago when I first had an opportunity to lay my hands on De Bethune watches I quickly realized that this was one of the few brands destined to earn my money when and if the time came when it their products were within my financial means.
De Bethune creates some of the most unique looking and distinctive watches on the market today. With a stellar aesthetic and standout case design, the new Skybridge is an interesting addition to their DB28 range of watches..
Mark Kelly probably started to get annoyed as I shot questions at him while we were stuck in the backseat of a van. I’ve learned the hard way that not everyone wants to talk about work all the time. He was a good sport though, and even agreed to speak with me again.
Seiko watches is about to release the mother of all limited edition watches for us nerds. In celebration of both the 35th anniversary of Star Wars…
Elon Musk’s SpaceX made big headlines recently as their Dragon capsule docked with the International Space Station (ISS). They also recently announced a new deal with the US military to transport payloads into space – which was only possible after they flew three successful missions in a row. While sending people to space started as […]
