Second only to the common jest of placing a sundial on the face of a wristwatch is the suggestion that there be an hourglass. Yes, the timing device of antiquity has a very low occurrence of actually being referenced on modern timepieces in any significant way. That perhaps is due to the fact that incorporating sand in a watch dial isn’t always the best idea. Nevertheless, the enterprising mind behind the Russian watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin decided that he wanted to be the first person to do it.

When buying high-end watches from small, independent watchmakers, you are buying the personality of the watchmaker as much as you are the watch. Like art, an investment in a boutique and perhaps one-of-a-kind watch is primarily emotional before it is practical. However, how often is it that you find the watchmaker’s face on the watch itself? The Sarpaneva Woodoo is one such example.
We are proud to be the first to announce a new collection of LEGO brand watches for adults. That’s right, LEGO, which has had a large collection of kids watches for years, will soon launch a comprehensive collection of timepieces for men and women in November 2013. These are among the very few plastic watches we would wear. What is fun is that despite being sized (and styled) for adults (at least adults in terms of age), the LEGO watches for adults have as many fully swappable parts as the kids versions have.
When are skulls on a watch the less controversial choice? When skulls replace bullets of course. As a limited edition (of perhaps only one), Yvan Arpa’s Artya brand based out of Geneva has created a special piece for Halloween 2013 of his Son of a Gun watch collection with skulls on the dial – as well as on the bracelet.
Hands-on look at the Montegrappa Chaos skulls watch made with Stallone
We found something very special on eBay that is an antique 18th century table sculpture and pocket watch. This unique creation appears to be a cast bronze figurine of the skeleton which sits atop a marble base.
We recently introduced the N.O.A Ghost collection of watches for 2013 with a sneak peak shot of the skeletonized, skull-emblazoned dial. Now you get to see the full collection along with the sister Skell collection of timepieces. Let’s get some initial confusion out of the way. First, the collections are pretty similar save for the skull on the dial…
It sure has been a while since we heard from Swiss watch maker N.O.A. I’ve always like their stuff, but a sad silence has emanated from the brand for a while. At least on our front door. Why? Well perhaps it might have something to do with the economy and the less expensive brand called Tendence…
In honor of the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday known of course as Dia de los Muertos, Swiss Romain Jerome watch will produce two limited edition timepieces. There isn’t too much to say about the new watches aside from describing them as they inherently are merely new dials for the brand.
There are skull watches and then there are skull watches like this. Looking like a Mexican “Day of the Dead special” (Dia de Los Muertos), this mechanical skull-shaped watch is full of personality and design talent. Right now it is a one-of-a-kind watch, but there are plans for production in the near future. The watch […]
If you like your watches whimsical and yet robust, the Helson Blackbeard chronograph might just make your day. As a followup to our white-dial Blackbeard review, Helson graciously agreed to loan us their sibling chronograph model for review. Based around the ETA/Valjoux 7750, perhaps the most popular automatic chronograph movement ever made, the watch has […]
When I saw the announcement for this watch I knew I had to review it. A cool indie diver from Helson with an embossed Jolly Roger on the dial? Awesome. Done in the style of the vintage Blancpain Fifty Fathoms (the bezel especially), the Blackbeard is thoroughly modern in execution: ETA 2824 movement, water resistant […]
This Halloween I’d like to present you with two creepy watches from Angular Momentum. Creepy yes, but in a more subtle “Swiss way.” The one that creeps me out most is the “Little Devil” watch – with images of a maniacal looking infant laughing over hell fire. But let’s get back to the “phenakistoscope” part […]
This watch looks like Big Ben from a nightmare. What looks like a Halloween holiday watch is actually the newest luxury timepieces from Daniel Strom, son of watch maker Armin Strom. I am sure that daddy is really keen on Daniel’s new dark art. Perhaps, it followed these events: first he dyed his hair black, […]
Some people speak for the trees, and others speak for the whales, and dolphins (and porpoises, sharks, turtles, and umm…. others animals). Enter the Sea Shepherd Conservation society, its boats, and its vagabond band of activists. Some people call them eco-terrorists, some call them the only people out there actively trying to do something about […]
These watches might have Corum skull watches beat. They at least match them! These two watches are part of Angular Momentum’s Artisan collection Eerie Timepiece line and have illustrative names such as “A Heap of Luminous Skulls” and “Juicy Skulls.” I really love these watches, and am just awestruck at the variety of wonderful watch […]
