For those of you rolling your eyes at the litany of five and six-figure watches being announced at Baselworld, set your jaded peepers on the new Tudor Heritage Ranger. Situated as their entry-level sport watch, the Ranger is Tudor’s everyday practical piece for the growing US market. Based on a design from the late sixties, the Tudor Ranger adds the typical Tudor flare to the field watch aesthetic and offers strap options to spare. We keep liking Tudor’s “Heritage” collection of watches for their style, timelessness, and of course fair (luxury) pricing. The Tudor Heritage Ranger ref. 79910 is also one of the most affordable new Tudor watches to date.

The new Tudor Ranger is 41 mm wide with a satin-finished steel case, a domed dial, and sapphire crystal. With drilled lugs, excellent legibility, and a rock solid ETA 2824 movement, the Ranger is about as fuss-free as it gets. With a design that is both classic and versatile, Tudor is making a total of four strap options available for the Ranger. Buyers will be able to choose between a brown leather bund strap, a camo nato-style strap, a brown leather standard strap or a matched stainless steel bracelet, so there will be no shortage of ways to wear the Ranger.

While the camo might be hyper-trendy, the bracelet features tube-type end links that really lock in the vintage tool vibe of the Ranger. Water resistance is 150 m and the screw-down crown carries the Tudor rose engraved on its flank. In many ways, the Ranger is Tudor’s take on the Rolex Explorer, but to these eyes the Tudor is a more successful and attractive design. Not only are the hands a proper length for the dial size, but the painted markers feel more suitable for a watch of this type, and the 41 mm sizing is more in line with today’s tastes.

With very limited dial text and a strong wrist presence, the Tudor Ranger is going to have a very wide range of appeal. We think the sizing is perfect and that the proportions are just right, with no one element being too subtle or too overpowering within the design as a whole.

With a list price of $2,825 USD on a strap and $2,950 on the bracelet, the Tudor Heritage Ranger offers a serious value to the buyer who wants an excellent casual and masculine watch that doesn’t cost a fortune. Compare the Ranger, or any other Tudor sport watch, against the competition in terms of fit, finish and case quality and you’ll quickly see why people are going nuts for their current line up. Between the new blue bezel Heritage Black Bay and the Heritage Ranger, Tudor’s using Baselworld to find a new place in your collection. tudorwatch.com
