Every watch collector loves telling the story of their “first nice watch” or “the watch that got them into watches.” More often than not, that first nice watch was a memento representing a specific moment in time — the first job, a graduation, a promotion, a wedding, or an anniversary, perhaps. Whatever the occasion, there are few watches that appeal more to new watch enthusiasts and longtime collectors alike to punctuate occasions like these than the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical, a Swiss-made standout for its authentic American military-issue heritage, iconic design, robust build quality, and superb value.

The Khaki Field Mechanical can be purchased in a box set that includes both straps (ref. H69439512)

Those four tenets have made the Khaki Field Mechanical one of Topper Jewelers’ best-selling Swiss watches since it first hit our shelves last year, which should come as little surprise to the growing body of collectors who already knew it enjoys the reputation of being one of the best values in Swiss-made watchmaking. With Topper’s input, Hamilton created a special white-dialed field watch that could be, at once, the perfect gift, a milestone watch, or simpler still: a special collectible and a classic adventure totem for more hardcore watch fans.

Shipping now, exclusively in the United States from Topper Jewelers, and just in time for graduation season, this watch is available in one of three configurations: a handsome leather pass-through strap that’s neatly color-matched to the lume plots on dial (ref. H69439511, which has a price of $525); on a rugged contrasting green nylon NATO strap befitting its field watch heritage (ref. H69439411 for $495); or you can get both straps in a special combination package that also includes a Hamilton-branded strap changing tool (ref. H69439512 for a price of $625).

Like the many classic white-dialed field watches that inspired it, the white dialed Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical is all about maximizing legibility in low-light situations. Though the crisp white dial maintains the same vintage-inspired ecru luminous paint on the hands and hour markers that is found on the current olive and black dial variants, the watch is now equipped with a new black handset to better contrast the dial beneath. Also unique to this version, the lumed hour indices feature black outlines around the triangular shaped indices for maximum contrast and legibility. Not only does this dial offer the best dial contrast (and thereby legibility) in the series, enthusiasts will also soon find that this color scheme is also a veritable “strap monster” that will look great on the two different stock NATO straps, as well as textured leather, different-colored canvas, and even rubber in the hot summer months.

On its exterior, the white-dialed variant is built around the Khaki Field Mechanical’s familiar 38mm bead-blasted 316L stainless steel case. However, in addition to the special white dial, its internals also get a significant upgrade, differentiating them from the 2017 global launch. This watch features Hamilton’s new H-50 caliber and a hand-wound mechanical movement with a generous 80 hours of power reserve, which wouldn’t be possible without a slight reduction to the watch’s beat rate, but it’s a worthy tradeoff, now that the watch can run without interaction for nearly four full days. This has been done without compromising the core component that has made the Khaki Field Mechanical such a popular option in the community: its marked affordability.
