2019 is the 20th anniversary of Seiko’s innovative Spring Drive movement which combines the accuracy of quartz regulation with the passion and tradition of mechanical movement craftsmanship. Grand Seiko will likely release a good number of anniversary launches over the course of the year but at Baselworld 2019 Grand Seiko has launched a brand new sports watch collection known as Grand Seiko Sport that introduces a brand new case (but no new movements at this time). More Spring Drive movements will be seen in the new Seiko Prospex LX collection. In addition to the two Grand Seiko Sport Chronograph GMT watches also released today, is this possible sleeper hit which is the three-hand with power reserve Grand Seiko Sport Spring Drive SBGA403.

The SBGA403 watch has a new case that is 44.5mm wide and 14.3mm thick with 200 meters of water resistance. The case is produced from high-intensity titanium and has a sapphire crystal bezel which is a nice touch we haven’t seen in a while from Grand Seiko. The case is smaller than some recent sporty Grand Seiko watches and we have full hopes that they will be comfortable to wear.

Seiko also introduces a new titanium bracelet that also uses the brand’s coveted Zaratsu polishing technique as well as a new sliding micro-adjust system in the delpoyant that we are also excited about. The textured dial has a khaki green color and this type of dial hasn’t been seen on Grand Seiko sport watches before as far as I know. Inside the watch is the in-house made Seiko caliber 9R15 automatic Spring Drive movement that is accurate to 10 second per month and has three days of power reserve. The dial feature the time, date, and power reserve hand as well as Spring Drive’s signature gliding seconds hand. The rear of the case has a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback and you can see the movement along with a new automatic rotor that has an 18k gold lion emblem in it.

Seiko is filling the space formerly held by less expensive Grand Seiko sport watches back to the Seiko brand (Grand Seiko is technically its own brand now) so these new Grand Seiko Sport models are decidedly high-end in price and form. Gone are the days where you could find a new Grand Seiko sport watch for around $5,000 or less. Retail price for the 2019 Grand Seiko Sport SBGA403 watch is $10,600 USD and it is a limited edition of 500 pieces. Learn more at the Grand Seiko website.
