For summer 2019, Spinnaker is releasing the Hull California and Hull California Tactical watches. These new models are a continuation of the popular Hull range, which is a cornerstone collection for the brand. The name of the collection comes from the shape of the case, the curvature of which has its inspiration in the hull of a ship.

The most striking thing about the new Spinnaker Hull California series is the unusual texture of the dial. Set within the Hull’s classic 316l stainless steel cushion case (42mm), the dial has a deep relief pattern conceived to resemble granite. In order to retain maximal legibility, the numerals are significantly raised and then coated with Swiss Super-LumiNova. This ensures the watches are still readable in low light conditions. The dial follows the traditional “California” layout, with Roman numerals used for the upper half of the dial and Arabic in the lower.

The numerals and the dial itself are the biggest changes from the standard Hull range and really imbue this new collection with a character of its own. In the past, the Hull range has used stick and dot markers. This layout signals a new direction for the brand and gives customers another option.

A railroad minute track and sharp, pencil hands complete a clear and classic display that is brought to life by the seldom-seen texturing of the dial, which is visible through the domed anti-reflective sapphire-infused mineral crystal. A date window at 3 o’clock is smartly proportioned so it is easy to read without distracting from the overall balance of the dial.

The Spinnaker Hull California Tactical watches are distinguished from the rest of the Californa collection by the starkly contrasting luminant used on the dial, which presents as white in daylight (as opposed to the warmer beige seen on the standard range). The tactical models also boast stealthier case treatments, with a choice between a comprehensive PVD titanium carbide coating, or a PVD titanium carbide-coated bezel paired with a finely blasted case. For added ruggedness, the Tactical sub-collection watches are fitted with a 22mm-wide rubber strap.

All watches in the new Spinnaker Hull California and Hull California Tactical collections have a screw down crown and are water resistant to 100 meters. Additionally, the leather straps fitted to the standard Hull California models are all treated with a waterproof coating to increase their lifespan.

These watches are powered by the durable and accurate NH35 automatic movement, which can be seen through a decorated exhibition caseback. The NH35 is made by Seiko and is a popular choice for independent brands looking for a reliable workhorse to power its watches. The inclusion of an automatic movement behind an exhibition window, in addition to the genuinely arresting dial aesthetic, makes the new Spinnaker Hull California and Hull California Tactical watches a real value proposition, given the attractive retail price of $275.
