With their familiarity, functionality, and simple forms, classic dive watches make an ideal jumping-off point for stylistic experimentation. Within the basic confines of waterproofing, legibility, and a unidirectional bezel, there exists a myriad of options for personal expression, and perhaps no other modern diver line demonstrates this better than the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf. The current Super Sea Wolf line encompasses everything from hardline recreations of ‘60s styles to tropical expressions of individuality like the recently-released Aquamarine Dream, and for its latest partnership the brand filters the midcentury-inspired diver design through the vibrant, funky patterned lens of the early ‘90s, calling to mind everything from Trapper Keepers to Reebok basketball shoes and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Created in partnership with watch media outlet Worn & Wound, the Worn & Wound x Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Limited Edition is playful, quirky proof of the Super Sea Wolf’s versatility as a platform for customization.
The 40mm stainless steel case of the Worn & Wound x Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Limited Edition follows the same classic skin diver formula as the standard model but reframes the familiar shape with several custom touches. The case is fully brushed here, giving a more utilitarian matte look to the long squared-off lugs. Without a doubt, the most eye-catching new addition here is the bezel insert, however, with a gray and cream splatter pattern accented by a 12-hour scale in teal and gold. Inspired by the vibrant clashing patterns of ‘90s sneaker design, this offbeat combination gives the Super Sea Wolf a funky new energy far removed from the base design. Around back, the solid caseback is topped with an engraving of Worn & Wound’s emblem. Like the standard model, the Worn & Wound x Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Limited Edition offers a dive-ready 200 meters of water resistance.
Like the case, the dial of the Worn & Wound x Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Limited Edition dresses the familiar forms of the Super Sea Wolf line in an eclectic mix of ‘90s-inspired bright colors and textures. The charcoal gray main dial surface forms a neutral base for these splashes of color to build upon, but even this relatively subdued element introduces a raised grid texture emulating fabric patterns on high-tech hiking gear. The rest of the dial design is decidedly more punchy. The rectangular applied indices are framed in a brick red tone, while the Super Sea Wolf’s familiar angular handset is given a boldly clashing color scheme in powder blue, traffic-cone orange, and mustard yellow for the seconds hand. This yellow tone is echoed in the outer minutes track, and Zodiac adds a final punch of color at 3 o’clock with a vibrant aquamarine date wheel. Taken as a whole, the dial is unorthodox and divisive by design but does carry a quirky retro charm that will likely captivate those with fond memories of the era.
Zodiac powers the Worn & Wound x Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Limited Edition with the Fossil Group-made STP 3-13 automatic movement. The STP 3-13 punches well above its weight in several specifications, boasting COSC-certified chronometer accuracy and a swan-neck regulator. Power reserve is decent as well, with Zodiac claiming 44 hours at a 28,800 bph beat rate. The Worn & Wound x Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Limited Edition is paired with a playfully mismatched nylon Velcro strap in black and turquoise. When combined with the eclectic use of color throughout the rest of this design, this tough and vibrant strap pairing makes an already high-profile design even more eye-catching on the wrist.
With a strikingly different look to its stablemates and a playful, offbeat ‘90s throwback spirit, the Worn & Wound x Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Limited Edition is a unique and interesting riff on this classic diver design.
