Breitling is well known for producing some of the most coveted and most used professional pilot watches. Go to any airshow and you are sure to see pilot enthusiasts and ex- and current pilots themselves wearing the brand's watches.

For their 100th anniversary in 1984, Breitling introduced what is now the flagship model of the Breitling collection: the Chronomat. The model has quickly grown into the brand's most popular and mainstream model. The Chronomat is a sturdy and distinctive professional chronograph with a distinguishing tri-compax dial, with large lumed baton hands and markers, as well as screw-down pushers and distinctive domed screw-down crown. The watch is also water resistant to 500 meters.

To celebrate 30 years since the release of the Chronomat, Breitling introduces at Baselworld 2014 a new Chronomat model with vintage inspired touches, the Breitling Chronomat Airborne. Like the other Chronomat models, the new Airborne comes in two main sizes, 41 mm and 44 mm diameter. Like the earlier 1984 model, the Airborne's unidirectional bezel is brushed stainless steel with black markers for the minutes and four raised tabs for the cardinal markers.

In addition to the twin size variations, the Airborne comes in two distinctive vintage dials: black with sierra silver subdials or sierra silver dial with black subdials. The lume on the hands and on the bezel's 60 minutes marker is also in this pinkish vintage color that matches well with the sierra silver touches of the dial.

As with other Brietling Chronomat models, one can customize the Airborne by choosing either the Breitling pilot steel bracelet or the new military black fabric that completes the tool character of this watch while keeping the vintage inspired touches.

Personally, not a fan of these multi-hand watches. But the Breitling Chronomat has a loyal crowd among aviation professionals and wannabes.

I predict that this will hit a very sweet spot among this crowd and do well for Breitling.

Front too fussy for me but nice caseback

I like Breitling but they are going about it the wrong way here...I guess they were aiming for manly/retro but the result feels like a Hello Kitty Maybach crossover...

I liked better the last model bezel.

That crown. I've never liked it. It spoils this watch for me.  It looks like a US fire hydrant, or one of Madonna's old boob get ups. Unfortunate really, because I find the remainder of the watch looks pretty decent.

I guess if you own one Breitling, you own them all.

One of the least offensive of the recent Breitlings.

Overkill? How many people need to know quarters of a second? And this tachymetre stuff? Reminds me of high school nerds from the sixties who carried a slide rule in their pocket-protectored pockets.

@DangerussArt

The signature crown for Chronomats remind me of large ventilator "caps" on restaurants & other buildings. If it's changed, there will be massive tribal uprisings among rabid devotees. These crowns do offer excellent gripping power, (un)screwing capabilities, & secure screwdowns against water/pressure damages.

Not sure I fully agree. I own a Navitimer 01 and soon enough will add a Chronomat to my collection. Especially since they go used for ~4 to 5K in great shape. Also, what's cool about the Chronomat is the different customization possible and that it can be used as a diver easily. Looks also super good and manly IMO

@Fraser Petrick

They could have developed a slide rule pocket protector, & eliminated the bulky ones. Also, maybe some nerd(s) attached clips to them to be carried like pens & knives. Better scales (if essential to people) are telemeter, pulseometer, & E6B (Navitimer).

@Maximilien I didn't say it looked bad - on the contrary it's fairly handsome, while not my favourite Breitling.  My implication was that it is very, very similar to past models, with a few visual tweaks here and there.

@Ulysses31 fair enough. I see your point. There is a unique Breitling design language that permeates most of the brands watches, and this one does not escape that mold. Same for many other brands, e.g., Rolex. That can be good and bad I guess. Thanks for commenting. Cheers :)
