Undone is democratizing custom made watches by offering affordable yet customizable timepieces via their watch customizer. Their Aqua dive collection was launched last year, with immense positive feedback from press and owners. For 2017, their new Urban Chronograph collection is available for pre-orders and pledges on Kickstarter until the end of December. Their project is titled "The US$175 Watch Challenge by Undone," which is currently over 700% funded with more than 800 backers.

Starting at a special introductory price of US$139 for fixed designs and US$159 for a custom unit, Undone aims to test and learn from their backers about people’s reaction to their customizable vintage concept chronograph. While the history of a vintage watch is impossible to reproduce, the team of 4 passionate watch collectors thinks that it is worth the time and effort to recreate a watch case that retains iconic key features of a 1960s vintage timepiece, with upgrades tailored to our modern-day lifestyle.

For the past 6 months, the Undone team have designed and prototyped their new customizable Urban Chronograph concept, which is inspired by five iconic and important vintage watches historically. Referenced classics include the Rolex Daytona "Paul Newman," Omega Speedmaster "Moonwatch," Heuer Autavia, Rolex Dato Compax "Jean Claude Killy," and Breitling Navitimer.

The Urban Chronograph doesn’t only come retro, it also comes customizable. The idea is to let everyone build their own interpretation of a vintage watch. After all, Undone’s mission statement is to "democratize customizable watches." The Undone Urban Chronograph is now available on Kickstarter for pre-orders, with fixed designs starting from a special introductory price of US$139, until 1st January 2017. The project has already raised over HKD$1,000,000 (US$12,000+) in total. You can check out the Urban Chronograph Kickstarter campaign here.

What makes the Undone’s Kickstarter project interesting is the motivation behind the product. Undone’s founder, Michael Young, has been serving and supplying top Swiss watch labels and conglomerates, e.g., Swatch Group, Hublot, Audemars Piglet, Omega, Frank Muller, Fortis, etc., with watch parts, packaging, and official repair services. He decided to leverage his own network of contacts and appointed the exact same factories collaboratively to produce the Urban Chronograph while maintaining their quality standards. When Michael was questioned on how he managed to drive down Undone’s cost structure, he explained that the experience of the Undone Team allows them to keep everything in-house, including product development, watch assembly, packaging and fulfillment. This greatly reduced fees and markups from external partners, which many other new brands employ to reduce their risk of over investment. You can watch the 3-minute video documentary titled "The US$200 Watch Challenge by Undone" on YouTube here.

The Undone Urban Chronograph comes in a highly detailed bespoke watch case that retains all signature vintage watch features, such as a super domed watch crystal, convex dial, stepped bezel, stepped round chronograph pushers, big crown, and straight lugs. While maintaining the retro look, the new Urban Chronograph has incorporated a modern touch of subtle improvements.

  • Modern upgrade to domed K1 hardened mineral glass from domed acrylic for maximum durability and scratch resistance
  • All Urban leather straps feature a vintage single thread finish, with a modern twist of using quick release spring bars for a tool-less strap changing experience
  • Powered by a VK61 hybrid movement by Seiko Instruments Inc., featuring a mechanical flyback sweeping chronograph and a reliable quartz timing module, reducing the cost of ownership to almost ZERO, compared to high servicing costs for traditional vintage timepieces.
  • Self-innovated dial and caseback printing technology, offering best-in-class personalization capabilities.

I see this as a signal that the vintage steel chronos craze has reached its peak

      Yes…time to ride the wave

  • DanW94

Nice price with familiar, attractive designs. I’ve been curious about trying a mecha-quartz powered chrono, these could definitely fit the bill.

    • Barry Sixx

Give us a chance, we have great track record delivering our flagship 200M Aqua Diver too, also customizable! 🙂

  • ??????

I got finally tired from pseudo-vintage trend. These aren’t bad, but just too tired.

    • Barry Sixx

This one is customizable though! I swear you will have some fun in the Urban Chronograph customizer! 🙂 Merry Christmas from Team Undone, try it out now: https://www.undone.watch/watch/customize/urban-vintage/209-214-216-206-225-243-263

Customizer is fun! But I am not sold on the watch. I want same approach, but for mechanical (preferrably, manual wind) watch: Unitas based for instance.

  • BrJean

    “Killy” is so cool!

      Merry Christmas with thanks:)

QUICK RELEASE STARPS???? MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED!!! I HATE HOW DIFFICULT TO RELEASE MY CURRENT STARPS ARE!!!ONE111ONE!1!!111ONE

I have no experience with these mecha quartz movements, and I do wonder what they’re like. The KILLY design is interesting…

    • ??????

I had one Seiko chrono some time before these microbrands started to speculate on “mecha-quartz” thing. I must say it’s more fun than some other quartz chronos: you get the real feedback from pushers like for mechanical chrono and sweeping second hand which really mimics mech. I wonder why Seiko didn’t speculate on that thing 🙂 they were just doing it. But microbrands shout about this like an advantage. Anyway, it is.

    • Shinytoys

      what’s a starp 🙂

    • Barry Sixx

Yeh right? It is that simple! A lot of brands don’t want users to do that easily because they want to ensure a standardized looks of the watch model on all wrists. We are the exact opposite, it is our customer’s individualities hat make up Undone.

  • Shawn Lavigne

i was wondering when these would show up here. i like the speedy. but i just don’t need anymore watches.

  • Adam Young

These look pretty good, and the price (especially the kickstarter price) is very reasonable.
I know that this is a sponsored post and it says so up front, but I do have an issue when things like this are written in the third person. This is, whether through an ad agency or not, written by the company, and posted here. Though when it’s in the third person voice it gives the impression it was written by ABTW.

    • Beefalope

      Huh?

How many advertisements are written in the first person?

Do you see the chairman of Nike telling you, “Hi, I’m Phil Knight, and I’m telling you to just do it.”

You’ve found possibly the dumbest thing imaginable to whine about.

      • Oxyclean and Shamwow?

I would totally buy a watch from Vince.

          Linguine martini bikini Parmigian-ini

      • Adam Young

I’m not a big fan of “Advertorials” being put on review sites. For ABTW (or any outlet)to be worth something they need to keep their integrity and readers need to trust what they write. The more sponsored content becomes indistinguishable from regular content there’s a problem.
There is a line at the beginning saying that it is an ad (as is required by law), but in this comment section alone there are multiple people who thought that one of the ABTW writers wrote this article as it is written like all the non-sponsored posts. In the previous sponsored post for watch safes it’s abundantly clear it is written by the company in the way it’s written. Am I whining? Probably, but I’m not the only one who thinks that there should be a clear line between ads and content. Not just for the reader’s sake, but for the content producer’s as well.

  • Didn’t we all just recently get a lecture about how “customized” and “personalized” are not the same thing within the article on the Tiffany watch? Guess you can’t be pedantic when someone is writing you a check.

In any case, these are pretty nice looking watches for people who want the vintage flair without having to scour eBay for iconic looks. And you really can’t beat the price at all. But “Undone”? What is it with Kickstarter companies and their bizarre branding conventions? That is a horrible name for a watch company – it conveys nothing about the label or the product and has more of a negative connotation than anything; the last thing I want is for something that fastens with a strap to come undone. Unless it’s a tongue in cheek name for a lingerie brand. I’m glad it doesn’t feature prominently on the dial.

I once found myself at a bar with Randy Bachman standing beside me. I got a text and interrupted our chit chat. At that point I had not revealed that I knew who he was. After I finished responding to the text I said something like: ‘sorry, that was rude. Was just taking care of business.’ He chuckled and we moved on exchanging polite meaningless words for a couple more minutes. Then his friend arrived and that was that

          • Bill W

            Annie Lennox was there too?

          • Berndt Norten

I wish! Actually everything I said is true…except for the part where I talked to him. It was Randy, alright, but I had the decency to respect his privacy. I certainly fantasized about how I could work one of his lyrics into a conversation. And, truth be told, he was across the bar, maybe 10 to 12 feet away. Heck, I’ve been closer to Phil Collins (he’s not dead yet, and truthfully, I’ve plucked the Guarneri of a world famous violinist I know through a friend. I met him at a Holiday Inn).

          • Berndt Norten

            I wish!

          • SuperStrapper

            Great story.

    • Shinytoys

undone, as in we the customer finish it?

      • Barry Sixx

Correct, that’s how the name comes from 🙂

    • Barry Sixx

One of the co-founders (not my self haha) came up with the name Undone to signify what we are doing: to Undone a watch to a state where there are only parts, ready for you to customize. It is a reveres engineered watch buying process. Without the final user customzing the watch, the end product wouldnt get made. Unlike traditional brands where they force feed designers to consumers. We are not competing with them on any watch design or price perspective on our product. Instead, Undone is about a new way of consunption, the freedom that every customer deserves in this generation, because individuality matters.

For the above reasons, we deliberately kept our name small and subtle below 6, because the user matters more than us. We don’t want to position ourselves as a watch brand either. We are about a new mode of consumption, about being the customization specialists, which we have plans to branch out our product offerings to sun-glasses, outdoor gear, sneakers, etc, all customizable. Hope this clears some confusion or bad perception. Merry Christmas brother!

I would like to inform the ABTW readership that for the next eight days I will be in Méribel (Courchevel), Rhônes-Alpes, for my annual skiing holiday. Consequently, please don’t be alarmed if you notice that I’m posting fewer comments.

Nevertheless, my fans, friends, followers, and admirers can meet me in person in Méribel. I will be staying at the Hotel Le Savoy, and to book an appointment with me, you just have to tell the concierge that you would like to speak to “The Young Alain Delon” or “The Handsome Watch Guru.”

Some of you might be wondering what watches I will bring along. Well, I will be using a Jaeger LeCoultre DeepSea Chronograph while on-piste; and a Patek 3940 Perpetual for the evenings.

In the meantime, I wish you all nasty, vicious, vile, cheap, and foul-mouth crustaceans a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    • ??????

Oh no, who will have courage to replace you in guiding the flock to light of watch connoisseurism.. the blog risks to drown in decance and ignorance. I need to try to compensate your absence by double concentration on bashing new watches

Meribel and Courchevel are poser paradises. Verbier is where serious skiers go. But you’re forgiven. Shred some for me! (I will be at a Northeastern US resort with around 2000 ft or 640 m vertical ?

This reminds me of that Laco pilot that was brand new, yet for someone who didn’t know, looked like it come direct from the WW2 Luftwaffe. These are not homages of a specific watch, like sub homages. These are homages of an unspecified watch from the past. As A_Watches says: its ‘peak’ vintage watch.

    • Barry Sixx

Very well said buddy, Merry Christmas!

  • Beefalope

I like the concept of what they’re doing quite a bit. At this price point, I may pick one of these up and hope they grow big enough to start using mechanical movements.

  • Juan-Antonio Garcia

    Cool watches, nice concept.
    Wish them well.
Again, what is with the freaking names? Does Undone mean awesome in Swedish or Malayan? Because in English, it means not done, not finished, get it?

Are the ABTW staff actually funding some of these so they can get ahold of the pieces for real world wear testing & scrutiny and/or have the “microbrands” volunteered to give watches for testing/review?

I’d actually like to see how these watches that get showered with promotional flowery prose hold up/perform for the long haul.

    • Shawn Lavigne

” I’d actually like to see how these watches that get showered with promotional flowery prose hold up/perform for the long haul. ”
      so would i.

      • BJ314

go on instagram. there are hundreds of owners posting their customized Undone watches and offering feedback. A number of guys who also own watches costing way above the $10K USD mark are collecting them. It’s kinda become the cool thing among several well-heeled watch collectors.

        • Barry Sixx

Thank you for the kind words buddy! It means a lot to have brand loyalists like you, crucial for Undone especially in the age of social media 🙂 Cheers buddy!

    • ABTW does not write Sponsored Posts, so the “flowery prose” comes from the brand, not Ariel and team ABTW writers. As these are not hands-on reviews, most often the ABTW writers have not had one of the subject watches in their hands either.

Ya know what Chaz, if you see one you like enough to purchase, you could write the review and Ariel would probably publish it. Anyway, I like your idea of more hands-on reviews – provided it is a watch that the ABTW readership seems truly interested in. Aloha buddy.

  • Bill W

Undone? Shoulda called the brand OpenFly.
You know, like the feeling of freedom you get when you’re flying in an old biplane. The speed, the thrill, the cold air whipping against your joystick.

    • I was unsure about the whole thing until I saw the airplane and quote from Wilbur Wright. Now I’m completely sold on the product and company. This little things matter. They just need a celebrity endorsement and an automotive angle. Then again, they don’t need any of that as they are funded.

      • Bill W

Better than some of his more prosaic quotations, like “Holy shit, this is kinda high up.”

Or Jean-Claude Killy’s “Winning tastes good. Engrave this quote in Our Store!”

i’m certain you can in later versions. on the their other model, you can have anything or nothing on the dials.

      • Barry Sixx

are freaking awesome. Been snatching them up lately. Tired of being a pretentious twat who has to take 3 minutes every morning to swap out watch bands. Now I can do it in 3 seconds.

Exactly, it is something very easy to do 🙂 Hope you’ll enjoy!

  • IG

Nice homage dials except the stupid UNDONEs. Keep it on the caseback, nobody cares about your “brand name”. The dials sell these watches.

    • Barry Sixx

We agree with you IG, that is exactly the reason for us to keep the brand name very subtle. We placed our brand name to where brands usually print the country of origin of the watch, just to inducate that your custom designed timepece is made and delievered by us. I hope that’s a fair deal 🙂 Merry Christmas my friend.

  • Emperius

Great looking watches with decent build and movement, priced dirt cheap. You can’t complain too much about an offer like that.

    • Barry Sixx

Hey it’s Barry here from Undone! Merry Christmas and thank you for your comment. We are currently offering a special intro price of US$175 to test out our concept and demand for various parts. Undone is a team of 4 who specializes in bringing watch customization to the mass market. Obviously, our challenge lies in logistics and inventory management to ensure enough parts in stock as show in our customizer, so that we can deliver customized watches to our customer’s door within 2 weeks 🙂

Don’t bother ordering from these people. They’re arrogant and they’re terrible at customer service. They’ll blame you for their own screw-ups.

I was dumb enough to fund this project through Kickstarter, and now I’m paying the price for it.

After the Kickstarter project was funded, communication was terrible from them. They claimed to have sent out surveys to customers, but numerous customers contacted them to say they had received nothing. They claimed to have sent out instructions in batches to people so they could build their watches. Numerous people didn’t get their instructions, including me. I sent them an email about it. In return, they sent me a link that didn’t work. I sent them another email, and their response was rude, condescending and blamed their customers for not being able to read. This was particularly irritating because this was all clearly their fault rather than the fault of their customers.

I haven’t received my watch yet. Given the ineptitude and disdain for customers I’ve seen thus far from them, I’m not anticipating that they’ll send me the watch in anything remotely resembling a timely manner, if at all, and I’m certainly not anticipating that the watch will be any good.

Frankly, it doesn’t matter because this company is run by arrogant jerks who don’t deserve your money.
