TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-01 Full Black Matt Ceramic Watch For CHF7,000 Watch Releases

The TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-01 Full Black Matt Ceramic is new for 2017 and the latest addition to the tirelessly expanding range of Carrera Heuer-01 watches. Not only the watch and its pricing, but also the timing and method of the announcement are interesting, so let's look under the "matt" black skin of this new piece.

This new model, available either on a rubber strap or, for quite a bit more, on a full ceramic bracelet, will make its official debut at the "Geneva Watch Fair 2017" – which is not to be confused with the Geneva watch show called SIHH, but rather a separate event that happens roughly at the same time in January, but on a boat, docked just outside the Beau-Rivage Palace in Geneva. While non-SIHH brands have for years been showing on their own mostly in hotel suites in downtown Geneva at the same time when retailers and members of press from around the world traveled to attend SIHH, this year they clearly are speeding things up to get as much attention as possible.

As such, we are presented with a rather impressive-looking new piece with the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-01 Full Black Matt Ceramic – I do wish the name rolled off the tongue that tiny bit more easily, but oh well. While ceramic watches have been around for a long time now largely due to Rado and a few others here and there, we have been seeing this highly scratch-resistant (but hardly at all shock-proof) material live its renaissance thanks to recent new releases like the Omega DSotM, Zenith for Land Rover, or the new ceramic Apple Watch, even.

TAG Heuer calls the Carrera Heuer-01 "the brand's current best-seller," so it is no wonder they keep releasing yet newer iterations, and it must be said that a full ceramic model is not something we see often – or at all, come to think of it. The case, bezel, lugs, and case band are all made from black ceramic with a micro-blasted finish, with all these being wrapped around a stainless steel core. The steel core is present because ceramic would not allow for such precision fitting of screws, gaskets, and threaded components as does steel. The case-back, just to spice things up a bit, is in satin-finished black titanium carbide with, but of course, a transparent sapphire crystal in the center.

Add to all this "full black" craze the, you guessed it, also "full black" ceramic bracelet with its H-shaped links and matt finishes, and you see the latest chapter in Jean-Claude Biver's "all black" concept unfold right in front of you. It appears to be a successful recipe and, to give credit where it's due, crafting the whole thing from ceramic is a more technically impressive solution than just PVD or DLC coating a steel case and bracelet.

The case is the 45mm-wide variant of the Heuer-01 – more recently some 43mm versions have been released. Inside the massive case is the Heuer-01 movement that features a column-wheel chronograph mechanism, automatic winding and 50 hours of power reserve. Despite the new material and overall design, TAG Heuer has kept this new piece relatively competitive. Available in two variants, the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-01 Full Black Matt Ceramic reference CAR2A91.BH0742 with the full ceramic bracelet will be priced at CHF7,000, while reference CAR2A91.FT6071 on the rubber strap will retail for CHF5,000. tagheuer.com

This goes out to Raymond, possibly my favorite foreigner:

Got a beat up Tag Heuer, from a secondhand store
Didn’t know how to read it, but he knew for sure
That one old Tag, it felt bad in his hands
Didn’t take long for him to understand
That shite Tag Heuer, it had to know
It had a one-way ticket…only one place to go
So Ray started tossin’, he might never ever stop
Super-boring watches, that box is filled up to the top

  • Sheez Gagoo

They need a better designer. In fact, they need a designer. Not the worst watch I’ve ever seen but this isn’t a grail as well. Looks like the computer decided how this watch has to look like. $7000 is not the worst deal for an all ceramic watch. Still a little to much for an ETA powered watch.

    • Chaz

They DO have a designer. The apprentice that lateral moved from Hublow.

  • Ben

OMG… the comments on ABTW (and Hodinkee too) become unbearable… so many snobs and WIS… guess what JCB does not care and neither should he because Tag’s sales have been soaring (and Hublot is not doing too bad either). So b*tch all you want but this watch will sell way better than these Omegas in ceramic for $12,000. I, for one, appreciate the value Tag is offering and for daring to wake up a brand which was dead to me a few years ago.

    • Bill W

Well now you’re dead to me, Ben.
Please return the Christmas card I sent you. 🙂

P.S. You’re right, these will sell better than the Omegas. That’s a big price difference.

      • Ben

Haha Bill, it is good to see someone with a sense of humor 😉 Your card is on the way… but I added mine as I do not hold a grudge. Happy Holidays!

    • phamdeleon

Ben, I hear you loud and clear! These snobs or I would like to refer them as CLOWNS in my previous post about the Aquaracer would love nothing more than to bash TAG. It’s like they sit here and wait for the latest review on a TAG and viola! time to bash guys! I’m really starting to believe that these guys are extremely angry because they just spent $50k on a watch that they thought was cool but has just realized that it has a third-party movement….ouch….

      • Ben

Absolutely! I usually keep my comment for myself but at some point, it is just too ridiculous to let it pass… come on, if all the commenters on these sites were top buyers the industry would not suffer that much. Besides there is not just one or one small group of brands holding the truth and the exclusive right to make watches. I could criticize every single one of them with the right amount of bad faith… but I prefer to see the positive in each and acknowledge that, for the ones I dislike the most, I am simply not the target. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I am not trying to convince everyone to share the same opinion as I, the “truth-holder”… people getting their panties in a bundle over a date window or short hands or (sacrilege) a non in-house movement is getting old… and seems like the repeated overheard (and over-written) comment without a thought or a proper justification… but more so because bashing has become the new trend and the easiest form of so-called opinion expression.

        • Ariel Adams

Don’t keep your comments to yourself. Have pride in your tastes and preferences, but of course respect those of others. Your opinions and feedback is an appreciated part of the community. I also happen to like these watches.

          • Berndt Norten

Just go easy on pride in your prejudices ?

        • Berndt Norten

Most of us are alienated from the means of production. We are the hollow men the stuffed men the suit and tied to desk men yes men organization men driven stark raving mad on tenement roofs illuminated men.

On sites like ABTW we are free, protected by anonymity.

Here we don’t claw about the floors of ancient silent seas.

Here we shout it out from e-rooftops; we be hurlers of e-thunderbolts from the pinnacle of our sometimes eloquent misery.

          Welcome aboard!??

          • Lincolnshire Poacher

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness.

            Or to mix it up.

Yes. I reconise Zarathustra. His eyes are clear now, no longer does he sneer with loathing. Just see how he dances along.

We’re educated types here. (Actually, I’m not, I just know how to use google).

          • Berndt Norten

Hell Eliot was the ultimate poacher! It’s like Beck (the musician) said: there’s no such thing as ‘pure’ country music, pure this, pure that. We’ve heard too much and we can’t un-learn what we hear. You said above ‘to mix it up.’ It makes one ponder the historical contribution of Sir Mix-a-Lot. I schiit you not. Many of his puns and jeux de mots have embedded themselves in the lexicon. Consider the liberal invocations of Sir M by our own BillW (don’t ask him about his acting career when he wants to talk about his music)

  • Shawn Lavigne

this is a great watch for telling the date at a glance. time… not so much.

  • Beefalope

    Total.

    Crap.

  • All I can see is the crooked date window.

I can’t unsee it. It’s like a frozen pixel on a brand new flat screen TV, or a gap in the smile of a supermodel, or someone humming a musical scale and leaving off the final “do”.

    It will haunt my nightmares.

    • wallydog2

      “frozen pixel” : perfect.

    • Juan-Antonio Garcia

Agree 100% except for the gap in the supermodel. I’ll take her, ugly gap and all. You can keep the pixel nightmares.

  • SuperStrapper

If we are going to have more than one TAG article a week then some new negative adjectives will need to be invented so all the elite whiners don’t sounds too repetitive.

  • AllTheCoolNamesWereTaken

They went full Hublot. You never go full Hublot.

  • Can’t tell what time it is, but at least that one looks worth the money, unlike that latest Aquaracer’s $3.5K price tag.

    • wallydog2

“Can’t tell what time it is,…” This Tag is marketed towards those of our community who pull their left sleeve up just a bit when hanging out in really cool places. It’s a “hey-look-at-me” watch. No thanks; I’m too old to care.

  • SuperStrapper

I like the new carrera, have tried one on a few times at an AD and think it makes a compelling argument to be my first TAG. ”ooks fine in ceramic and the bracelet option is interesting.

I would change the date display. I think the stark white is a bit too stark (in the marketing images anyway, a real look might tell a different story) and would suggest that a little splash of muted colour mght have worked better.

Mark, or Russ: hack a photo and give me a date background that matches the colour of the visible jewels in the movement.

  • IanE

I guess it must be catching the young vibe (JCB usually seems to manage) – personally, I’d prefer a proper dial or at least to have that ring of dates hidden!

  • Raymond Wilkie

I wasn’t too keen on this brand before this, ………..and i still don’t rate them. Sure you can see all the wheely bits going round and stuff but what idiot decided black on black was a winner……..the date window annoys me to.

  • DanW94

I think Tag has killed it with a few recently released watches, notably the Monza reissue and the the Carrera Calibre 18 chronograph with the telemeter from a year or so back. That’s a dynamite looking watch. I don’t find these skeletonized Heuer 01 models as appealing.

  • Marius

The prices reported by ABTW are erroneous. In reality, the ceramic bracelet reference, as well the reference on the rubber strap will have EXACTLY THE SAME PRICE — $6,300.

    • David Bredan

Latest official TAG Heuer communication tells us its CHF5000 and CHF7000 depending on the version. Until we receive new updates from them, we’ll leave it as it is. Also, the same price for either option sounds highly unlikely given the much greater cost of the full ceramic bracelet. We’ll refresh the article as soon as we hear about updates, should there be any. Last, but not least, as is pretty much always the case with pre-[event_name_here] releases, it usually isn’t until at least a few months till the watch gets to the retailers and prices often change at that point. In any case, the CHF7k top price gives everyone a good idea.

  • The Reclusive Boogur T. Wang

Obviously, this is not the targeted demographic for this piece.
Thanks Mr. Bredan – good review of a less-than-legible piece.

“They went full Hublot. You never go full Hublot.”…Classic.

  • Lawrence

    rubber strap would look better.

  • Richard Baptist

Reminds me of a Hublot. I hate the date numbers around the dial. These new watches from Tag always seem to have too much going on in the dial. I don’t think I like it. The price seems great for a ceramic piece.

  • Kuroji

I confess. I am intrigued by this variation. My main concern is the ultra-loViz nature, and possibly the thickness, which is currently unspecified.

  • IVA the LT

So which “Matt” is this watch honoring?

Also, if it’s a “full black” watch, with an in-house movement, then why could they not use a black date wheel? Or design it to have the date window at 3:00?

    Just curious…………..

  • ??????

Biver, what’s the reason to just take Heuer and… Abracadabra! It’s Hublot now! Wow, what a cool decision! TAG Heuer = Hublot, and Hublot = TAG Heuer, and both are.. crap. Bunch of details, impossible to read the time with.

    • ROBERT CARRIER

      Clearly, 10:10.

  • Pœrtöle DuFèr

I’m struggling to decide whether Tag is trying something new and game changing here, or whether Buver’s just trotting out the same old ideas and design language that has served him and Hublot so financially well for the past decade.

  • Ulysses31

It’s so cluttered. The dial looks small and overwhelmed by the chunky and rather nice bezel. It has all the elegance and beauty of a truck tyre, and as a result I can’t get excited by it. I’m more dismayed by it, actually. This is the kind of aesthetic you’d find in a Police watch, not something that costs 7K.

  • ROBERT CARRIER

The bracelet costs £1500 more than the rubber………!

  • HenryL

This Tag is beginning to look just like a Hublot. I’m sure it definitely has something to do with Mr. Biver’s taking the helm at the company.
