Trade show season is here again, and while there may not be physical debut events to attend here in 2020, brands are still forging ahead with this year’s Watches and Wonders online. As part of this event, independent favorite Oris has announced a new addition to its Divers Sixty-Five dive watch lineup in conjunction with premium Japanese denim brand Momotaro: the Oris X Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five Special Edition. This new release combines the modern classic two-tone Divers Sixty-Five skin diver formula with the aesthetics and materials of high-end luxury jeans for an oddly satisfying combination.

Since first appearing on the scene in 2015, the Oris Divers Sixty-Five has proven itself to be a remarkably versatile platform for experimenting with the form of a classic dive watch. From the funky ‘60s lume plots of the original release to some truly elegant takes on bronze, the Divers Sixty-Five has become a canvas for designers to experiment with the diver style, in general. This new Oris X Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five Special Edition is another bold direction for the formula, one that iterates just enough to set itself apart from the pack without feeling outlandish. The 40mm two-tone case is carried over from previous Divers Sixty-Five models, as are the dial layout and Oris 733 movement, leaving the designers to really hone in on the style and spirit of high-end denim. For those not in the know, Momotaro is one of the world’s foremost luxury denim brands, helping to spur on a denim culture nearly as deep and as vibrant as watch culture from its headquarters in Okayama, Japan. The dial helps to capture some of this spirit, with a unique blue-green degradè tone that echoes the look and feel of a well faded pair of jeans. The unique strap brings this home, with a premium indigo denim material made by Momotaro and finished with denim-label leather lining and the brand’s signature white “battle stripes.”

While not the most versatile iteration of the Oris Divers Sixty-Five formula, the Oris X Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five Special Edition is an eye-catching casual accent to the core collection. While the watch and particularly that faded teal dial look good enough out of the box, it’s easy to imagine that the real aesthetic test of this pairing will come once the Momotaro denim strap acquires some faded wear to match that dial tone. The Oris X Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five Special Edition will be available from authorized dealers beginning in late May at an MSRP of $2,200. For more information, please visit Oris’ website.
