My name is Guy Roebuck, a New Zealand native now based in Austin, Texas. After a 20-year career in Architectural Drafting, I had a desire for a new direction. With my love of design and passion for watches, creating my own watch brand seemed like a logical step. I founded Roebuck Watch Company in 2015. With the Roebuck Alpha collection, I wanted a bold watch, something out of the ordinary, and interesting. The dial is the main feature of the watch, so let’s start there.

The idea of the dial stems from the ever-changing beauty of water: the sandwich dial represents a bridge over a pond into which a stone has been dropped, creating ripples cascading outward. On top of the upper dial sit polished applied numerals and indices featuring Super-LumiNova C1 (orange on the ‘Black Sheep’ version). The 12 and 6 markers and the indices on either side cantilever over the lower dial—a nod to architecture that features cantilevers to great effect like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. The skeleton hands were designed so that they would not obscure too much of the dial below and are also polished with the same lume. The seconds hand is tipped in red, which is the company color.

The Alpha will come in 2 cases: stainless steel and PVD-coated stainless steel (dubbed the Black Sheep). The case is a cushion design in 316L stainless steel, 40mm x 40mm x 13.9mm. I felt that 40mm was a good size for the larger wrist, as being square they ‘wear’ larger than round watches but don’t look overbearing on a smaller wrist. The top face is polished to add to the bold theme with etched stripes centered on the crown and horizontal brushing to the sides, as well as vertical brushing on the outside and the ends of the lugs. The Black Sheep’s case is PVD-coated in IP dark gun. The crystal is sapphire and double domed with an anti-reflective coating to the underside. The porthole in the caseback is the same minus the A/R coating.

The tried and true Seiko NH35A automatic movement powers the Alpha with a 41 hour power reserve and features hacking, hand-winding, and bi-directional self-winding. The straps are Italian leather with color matched stitching to the dial or the numerals on the Black sheep and have monogrammed buckles. The Black Sheep’s buckle is also PVD coated. I have designed a bracelet for the watch, which is polished with a butterfly deployant clasp. This will be one of the Kickstarter stretch goals.
