Depending on where you are on earth, the odds that you’ll experience a solar eclipse anytime soon are slim, as they only occur once every 400 years or so for any given location. That said, if you happen to be aboard the International Space Station, you’ll be lucky enough to witness this astronomical event 16 times a day, watching the sun sink behind the earth, its celestial rays disappearing for 45 minutes before once again returning to illuminate the world. If that’s still not quite enough, TimeCore has introduced an Eclipse for your wrist, a watch created in celebration of the final frontier, inspired by syzygy, the alignment of three celestial objects.

Though new to the watch scene, TimeCore is no stranger to design. Trained at the top design schools in the world, and with over 40 years of experience working everything from custom cars, feature films, and consumer products for major brands, from Sony to Hasbro, TimeCore knows a thing or two about design. Harnessing those decades of experience, the brand is now entering into the watch market with a goal of pushing the boundaries of form and function.

A quick glance at the Time Core Eclipse makes it clear that this is far from a cookie-cutter watch designed to appeal to the broadest possible audience. Instead, TimeCore built the Eclipse as a celebration of outer space and our timeless fascination with the stars. Using space as inspiration, each element — from the case to the dial to the crown — was thoughtfully considered to bring to mind our connection to the rest of the solar system.

The case itself is crafted from stainless steel and, in two models, coated in PVD. The case shape is oversized at 52mm and attention-grabbing, its asymmetrical shape evoking the sun about to slip behind the moon at the start of a solar eclipse (if you’re in the northern hemisphere, anyway). Viewed from the side, the sweeping lines and smooth curves are otherworldly, more akin to a spaceship than a watch. Even the dial and bezel use a concave outer radius edge, modeled after the dish-shaped craters that mar the surface of the moon and other planetary objects.

The shapes and lines of the case were chosen not just as a connection to the cosmic realm but were specifically designed to hold highlights and create focal points. As the brand makes clear, the way in which reflections run over the surface of a product is a critical foundation for good design.

Though not yet tested in the vacuum of space, the Eclipse has been tested to 100m of water resistance. In keeping with practicality and a robust build, TimeCore tops the Eclipse with a domed K1 mineral crystal for its strength and shatter and scratch resistance. The Eclipse is also equipped with a screw-down crown that’s machined to look like an essential element from a ship traversing the stars.

The Eclipse is launching in three distinct colorways, each with its own unique dial and personality, yet each capturing the allure of the stars. Whether you choose the stainless-steel case with the TimeCore logo at 12 o’clock, the PVD black case with the logo in orbit near 9 o’clock, or the PVD black case model with blue highlights, each evokes an aspect of space with a dial that complements the otherworldly case. Of course, a watch like this wouldn’t be complete without luminous hands and markers and, in this case, the brand has opted for LumiBrite for long-lasting luminosity.

To power the Eclipse, TimeCore has chosen the ever-reliable Seiko NH35 automatic movement. Beating at 21.6kbph, with 23 jewels, hacking seconds, a date function, and ~41 hours of power reserve, the NH35 is a solid choice for any watch. Completing the watch is a custom watch strap that will be crafted from silicone or TPU (photos show the prototype 3D prints). The strap is designed to harmonize with the case, with soft curves and lines. Finally, the watch will be finished off with an engraved and etched screw-down caseback. Components for the Eclipse are manufactured in Japan and China, with all assembly taking place in the USA, allowing TimeCore to balance price and quality.
