Baselworld 2013: Rolex Announces New Colors for the Day Date watch releases

For Rolex, Baselworld 2013 seems to be all about color. Not only has the brand introduced new color variants for both the GMT-Master II and the Daytona, but they have also announced a series of new colorful versions for the Day-Date range. Spanning six different colors across three different gold cases, these new Day-Date models reflect the current popularity of wearing a Day-Date or Datejust on a leather strap. Each model color has a matching strap that accents the dial color and offers a fun and youthful vibe not always associated with this normally conservative Swiss brand.

Cases can be had in 18 ct yellow, white or Rolex’s Everose gold, each metal has its own range of colored dials. These new Day-Dates offer the following dial color choices, green or cognac matched with yellow gold, blue or cherry with white gold, and chocolate or rhodium for Averroes models. Aside from these new colors, the 118138/118139 Day-Date is unchanged from the standard model, still measuring 36mm wide and powered by the calibre 3155 automatic COSC movement with instantaneous day and date displays. We could see these being very popular among women and they definitely offer a recognizable Rolex platform with a splash of bright color and a nicely matched strap. Pricing has not yet been stated but we will be sure to update with the latest information as it becomes available.

This is like seeing a geriatric put on a hawaiian shirt to try out a new, fresh look.  I'm all for Rolex mixing things up.  They've been riding the same horses for far too many years, but maybe those old limbs could stretch a bit further than a spin on the color wheel.  Coupled with the Tudor releases, I feel like Rolex is going through some kind of mid-life crisis and trying to find some remnant of youth long gone.

And it still looks like a recycled bottle cap.

Is nothing sacred? Coloured straps? What's next, quartz digital?

In the meantime I wouldn't be caught dead in a Rolex. They are so over-marketed (something like Tommy Hilfiger shirts) that they've lost their mystique. A Rolex may impress the neighbours back at the farm, but me, a watch snob....? (However, if a rich uncle wants to buy me Rollie, I'll live with the commonness.

(Nothing's more pathetic than a snob with no money.)

Pro- Blue & Green dials of Day Date II.

Con- Don't care for the straps or the other new colors.

I'm as conservative as Rolex (maybe more so) when it comes to watches. The cleaner the design, the better it looks.

Would like to see the blue & green dials with bracelets, which I'm sure Rolex will be willing to accommodate me.

HOLY SHIT! NEW COLOURS FOR THE DAY DATE? HOW DID THEY FIGURE THAT OUT IN JUST 55 YEARS??? THEY MUST HAVE THE MOST COMPLEX R&D DEPARTMENT EVAR 4 REALZ!

Rolex's new motto should be: YHBT.

Rolex Designer 1: "So what are we gonna do for next year at Basel World?"
Rolex Designer 2: *plays with the hue setting in Photoshop*... "Jackpot!"

It's probably for the best.  Don't want to give the old men heart-attacks with any sudden, drastic changes.
