Tag Heuer Monza Automatic Chronograph Calibre 36 “Re-Edition” Watch

Tag Heuer Monza Automatic Chronograph Calibre 36 Re Edition Watch tag heuer

2011 saw both super high-tech and decidedly retro watches from Tag Heuer. The most retro of which was probably this "re-issue" Monza. The Monza came back briefly in 2003 with an updated look using the traditional cushion case. For 2011 original look from the 1930s is back. There is no hiding that this is a retro-themed timepieces. It doesn't attempt to be "classic," by instead to offer a look from times long past, in today's quality and materials.

The dial is all 1930s and the case is much more 1970s. According to Tag Heuer the design of the watch draws from both eras. In steel, the case is 38mm wide and cushion shaped. I like the brushed bezel and polished outer side of the case. The dial is exceptionally easy to read with its high contrast hands and numerals. Tag Heuer uses their "heritage" logo that is just "Heuer, " with "Monza" right above. The numerals are very retro looking and they used a cream colored lume outlined in blue (to match the hands).

The bi-compax dial layout for the chronograph is fitting, and inside the watch is the Calibre 36 automatic. I believe this is actually a Zenith El Primero high-beat automatic. This is one of the most sought after Tag movements, and you can see it through the sapphire display back. The automatic movement is COSC Chronometer certified. Don't miss the date window covertly placed between 4 and 5 o'clock. Tag Heuer watches like this aren't made for mass consumption - like many of the heritage collection pieces, this will be part of a limited edition of just 1911 pieces.

For me the question is "when can you wear the watch?" The execution is good and I like the piece, but I am not sure what I would wear it with. New York fashion dudes would no doubt find something to wear this with, but can you pull it off with a t-shirt and jeans? Maybe. The strap is brown leather that looks a bit like bomber jacket leather. Very typical of the time period it is trying to emulate.  I believe the Tag Heuer Monza Automatic Chronograph Calibre 36 Re-Edition watch will cost about $8,000 bucks, and should be available (starting in Switzerland) in June.

Appologies for being slightly off topic here, but I'm hoping someone can give me some advice regarding my issue. About 7-8 years ago, my wife bought me a TAG Heuer Monza Calibre 6. This is the first and only "really nice" watch I've ever owned, but I must say I've been sorely dissapointed in its performance. It runs 2 minutes fast each day. I've had it sent back to the manufacturer twice and it's still no better. I'm just wondering if this is typical for this TAG Heuer or even watches in the $1500 - $2000 range in general?

I contend Heuer is getting like Omega along with others by raising prices to boutique status, & acing out commoners by not offering good cost/value ratios. The patented limited edition schtick is also a blunt kick in the testes.

To be fair, Omega is using high quality movements in their more expensive new releases and this particular TAG Heuer makes use of the fine El Primero movement. TAG still offers fair-priced chronographs, but I think their long-term plans match your observations. At least the quality of these watches seems to be improving as prices skyrocket. An edition of 1900+ watches is not exactly limited, so this Monza may be a nice used watch value in a few years!

Ariel, this Tag is the first watch you've reviewed in quite a while that is truely beautiful. The old-style hands and numbers set in a tasteful, modern case -- all done with reserve -- make this a really nice piece. It's the first Tag I've seen that I'd like to have.

I am conflicted on the design of this watch. I think, over-all, it is a nice piece. However, that is because I really like the case and the face design (and the movement). The hands, the pushers, and the crown all seem like they belong on other watches. The hands seem a bit ornate and or the wrong era for the rest of the piece. The pushers are fine, but they break the flow of the case design, they are the standard for a round case, and show a kind of a abdication of responsibility to design a whole watch, in favor of grabbing some parts out of a bin ... or maybe they just look weird with that crown (or vice versa). I don't know. There is something about that part of the watch that looks lazy to me.

Although i believe i've said i'm glad the Monza has returned i do not like the dial on this the last reissue was much nicer. What to wear this with though is easy boatshoes, khaki's, blue button down oxfordand it's job done!!

Boat shoes.... why didn't I think of that? :)

I think it's a gorgeous watch. I love cushion cases. The hands are ornate but not overly so, and the numerals use an interesting font that looks both old-fashioned and contemporary. All will be sold out long before I could afford one sadly.
