If there’s one word that defines GANE watches, it’s creativity. Founder and Malaysian-born Raymond Pee’s life has been shaped by art, music, and photography. In GANE watches, these creative pursuits have melded together to produce a unique line of watches in the brand’s first release, the Type C Automatic. Timeless and versatile, but aesthetically distinctive, the Type C combines vintage cues with a modern execution.

Raymond was surrounded by the beautiful sights and sounds of Malaysia, then later moved to Singapore for university, where he is currently located with his family. Malaysia and Singapore are well-known for their beautiful architecture and diverse cultural influences. No surprise, then, that Raymond, an avid watch collector and photographer, decided to set his sights on watchmaking as a creative pursuit. Recognizing that the first step in creating a timepiece of exceptional quality was to find the best partners, Raymond formed a partnership with a major Swiss watch producer and member of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH to bring the project to life. The result is a lineup of three beautifully crafted and visually distinctive watches in the Type C line, each with a dial that has its own unique personality and story to tell. Why name his first watch the Type C? It all comes back to music — C is the first note on the musical scale, so what better note to usher in a new brand?

The case of the Type C is crafted from 316L stainless steel, topped by a boxed sapphire crystal. Measuring in at a wrist-friendly 38mm with a short lug-to-lug distance of 45mm, the Type C was designed to be extremely comfortable to wear day-in and day-out. The angled tonneau case shape has an Art Deco vibe, but the execution is completely fresh and modern. The entire case features vertically brushed surfaces with one exception — a single polished chamfer running along the top of the case. A small gesture, but one that adds a touch of elegance. Flip the watch over and the caseback has a personal touch: an engraving designed by Raymond in honor of his late mother, Justilla. It is based on a sketch that represents fairness, love, and illumination.

The dials on the Type C are undoubtedly a standout element, with each colorway imbued with its own unique personality. The dials have a three-dimensional effect, created by using a two-plate dial construction with CNC-milled indices. This construction gives the dial of the Type C a structural elegance and depth that’s simply mesmerizing. Each colorway was chosen to enhance the lines of the dial and produce a distinctive effect.

The C1 Automatic Sandy Salmon, in particular, features a dial reminiscent of ancient sundials crafted in metals like bronze, copper, and brass that took on an organic reddish hue. Coupled with the milled indices, the inspiration is striking. Salmon dials add an elegant touch to any watch, allowing the watch to be dressed up with ease. The C2 Automatic Brushed Blue, on the other hand, evokes a completely different vibe — part sporty, part subdued. The indigo hues dance on the brushed surface in different lighting, changing from deep to brilliant blue. Rounding out the collection is the C3 Automatic Steely Silver. Strong and bold, the steel dial is eye-catching, to say the least. Coupled with the steel bracelet, the Steely Silver is built for adventure.

Powering the GANE Type C is the Citizen Miyota 8215 automatic movement. GANE chose the Miyota 8215 because of the highly reliable movement that also allows GANE to keep the Type C at an accessible price point. With a 42-hour power reserve, 21 jewels, and beating at 21.6kbph, it’s a movement that’s built to last.

The GANE Type C is available on either a vintage, thick-cut, vegetable-tanned Italian leather strap or a five-link bracelet. The leather and bracelet provide completely different aesthetics for the watch. The bracelet flows seamlessly with the lines of the case, carrying on the vertical brushed finish and adding a vintage touch. Securing the bracelet is a butterfly clasp with push-button release. The GANE Type C is available now for $555 on bracelet or $495 on leather strap, with free shipping worldwide.
