For most brands, anniversaries tend to be an opportunity to release a precious metal version of a popular watch, a rare complication, or an extremely limited (and often expensive) watch, effectively appealing to only the most dedicated collectors — or those with the deepest pockets. NOMOS has taken the exact opposite approach in celebrating 175 years of watchmaking in Glashütte. In late 2020, the German brand released three new models in their flagship Lambda watch. Previously only available in precious metal, the anniversary editions of this elegant, minimal dress watch come in stainless steel at a much more palatable price. For their latest limited edition celebrating Glashütte’s dodransbicentennial, NOMOS brings back their entry-level automatic Club in three gorgeous new colorways – onyx, navy, and olive green.

 

Since master watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange first arrived in Glashütte in 1845 under the Saxon King’s directive to transform the impoverished former mining town into a hub of watchmaking, Glashütte has been renowned for producing some of the world’s finest watches. In order to earn the right to adorn the watch with the Glashütte name, at least 50% of the value of the watch’s caliber must be created in Glashütte – NOMOS easily exceeds this benchmark, with over 95% of their in-house calibers created on site. A quick look at these calibers reveals all the town’s trademarks: Glashütte three-quarter plate, barrel, and gear train, Glashütte stopwork, swan-neck fine adjustment, and a number of decorations that have come to define the region’s movements.

Though NOMOS has only been in business since 1990, it’s become a mainstay of Glashütte watchmaking and is now the largest brand operating out of the tiny Saxon town. Every bit a modern brand, NOMOS is a full-fledged member of the small, but venerable Glashütte community, and manages to simultaneously combine a distinctly modern aesthetic with the best of Glashütte’s tradition of old-world artistry and craftsmanship.

The Club is a mainstay of the NOMOS lineup and is available in a bevy of colors, styles, and sizes. What unites these models, however, is their versatility. These are watches made to be worn every day, in any situation. The polished surfaces, minimalist design, and slim 9.7mm height will work in all but the most formal situations. However, the 200m of water resistance ensures that you’ll never have to worry about where your adventures take you. These new anniversary releases are housed in a 40mm stainless-steel case with NOMOS’s signature long lugs and high-polish finish. The soft lines of the case, seamless integration between the bezel and mid-case, and long sloping lugs give the entire piece a structural beauty that is all NOMOS.

One thing that sets NOMOS apart is its absolute mastery of color, and these new releases are no exception. The Club Automat is available in three colorways – onyx, navy, and olive. For those attracted to the Club Sport but hoping for a smaller, no-date version, this might be just the ticket. Like the Club Sport, the onyx Club Automat comes fitted to NOMOS’s extremely comfortable and stylish sports bracelet.

The navy and olive versions come mounted on textile straps – blue/black for the navy dial and light grey for the olive. As always, the colors simply work. Small pops of gold delineating the five-minute marks tie each dial together with just a hint of warmth to play off the cool white of the hands and indices. Speaking of which, those hands and numerals are coated with ample SuperLuminova to ensure nighttime legibility.

Each limited-edition Club Automat is powered by the DUW 5001 automatic movement. The DUW 5001 features NOMOS’s Swing System, 26 jewels, and 43-hour power reserve. Thankfully, this movement is on full display behind the sapphire caseback since the finishing is superb at this price point – the Glashutte three-quarter plate is complemented by tempered blue balance spring and screws, Glashütte ribbing, and perlage. The movement is adjusted in six positions to chronometer standards ensuring accurate timekeeping.

Only 175 pieces of each colorway will be available for purchase at the end of February 2021; the onyx comes on the sport bracelet for $2920 USD, but can be purchased on a textile strap for $2620 USD.
