Nomos-Metro-3

The Metro is 37 mm wide and just 7.65 mm thick. It is exceedingly wearable, striking without being brash and feels very modern and stylish on wrist. While the Nomos aesthetic won’t appeal to everyone, I love it. The Metro retains so much of what they do well, like expansive dials, legible designs and delicate use of color, while offering something entirely different from their core line up. The case sizing may seem small in print but on wrist the Metro wears more like 39 or 40 mm and it really didn’t feel a lot smaller than the Ahoi, which wears larger than its 40 mm width would suggest.

The use of color would suggest that the Metro is a casual or even sporty Nomos design and I really like the combination of the silvery-white dial, red accents on the seconds hand and low-power indicator and the sparse use of mint green at 3, 9, and 12 and on the disc for the power reserve display. As the power reserve winds low, more red is shown in the aperture inside the mint green disc. Combine the clock-like dial with the new and perfectly proportioned pin-point hands and you have an attractive and versatile Nomos ready for everyday wear.

The wire lugs are a huge step away from Nomos’ core design but I think they look awesome and, when combined with a quick-release strap, offer a fast way of swapping a different color onto the Metro (which would look excellent on a dark brown strap). The lug design does mean that you will be limited to proprietary straps from Nomos, but they plan to offer a few color choices in the future. If you look at the wrist shot, I believe the Metro can be easily identified as a Nomos design, but exhibits a number of strange elements that I find really appealing. For a brand with such a well-defined style, I like that they took a gamble with something a little weird. Like its power reserve display, the Metro is just a little off-center.

The Metro will carry a list price of $3780 USD and for that money you’re not going to find a lot of direct (or similar) competition. Featuring a movement that is almost entirely executed in-house and an eccentric and attractive modern design, the Metro’s only competition is going to be from other watches within the Nomos family. As a more casual alternative to the Orion 38 or a more exciting choice over the Tangente, the Metro is calm, cool and collected and being a Nomos, offers serious value to those who appreciate the style and do-it-yourself attitude of this exciting German brand. nomos-glashuette.com
