Tool watches are more often concerned with utility than aesthetics, though the two qualities are hardly mutually exclusive. Simplicity and legibility are the two most important priorities for such watches, and the J&Berg B2 offers both, along with a pop of color thanks to its tastefully designed sandwich dial. It’s a timepiece that’s as equally comfortable in rugged field conditions as it is during a casual day around town.

J&Berg is a newly formed watch brand based in the town of Oulu, located in northern Finland. The B2 is its take on the classic tool watch, starting with the highly durable 38.5mm wide case constructed of hypoallergenic Grade 5 titanium which is sandblasted for a gentle satin finish. The watch maintains a svelte profile with a thickness of only 10mm, which includes the anti-reflective sapphire crystal and weighs in at a mere 53 grams, making for an extremely light-wearing experience.

The standout feature of the B2 is the handsome, textured sandwich dial. Constructed of two layers, the recessed lower layer has a radially brushed finish in three color options: turquoise, copper, and dark brown, all of which radiate with a gentle sheen and give the B2 a perfect touch of sophistication. The upper layer presents a subtle contrast in surfaces thanks to its matte-black finish with printed white minute markers. Meanwhile, the hour markers are cut out from this layer to reveal the Super-LumiNova BGW9 underneath. This stacked dial structure gives the watch appealing visual depth while preserving maximum legibility in all situations.

Inside the B2 watch is a Miyota 9039 movement, a premium Japanese workhorse that beats away at a frequency of 4Hz/28,800 bph and offers 42 hours of power reserve. Water resistance is a sturdy 10 ATM, and the case of the B2 sports a large knurled crown for easy time setting and operation.

Each B2 watch is assembled in Hong Kong by a company that was formed in partnership with a reputable Swiss watch manufacturer, with all final inspections occurring at J&Berg’s headquarters in Finland. This arrangement gives J&Berg access to the best tools and processes for making high-quality timepieces. The first batch of B2 watches will be an order of 300 pieces, with 100 pieces allocated to each colorway. This will not be a limited-edition model, but availability may vary due to the measured approach J&Berg is taking with its inventory. As a new brand, it is eschewing any crowdfunding and will instead be releasing batches according to demand. Once a certain level of interest is reached with the B2, J&Berg will then make the bulk order with its manufacturer. Pricing for the B2 will be $489 USD / 459 Euros, excluding taxes, and VAT will be added for customers residing in the EU. To indicate your interest in a B2 watch, please visit the J&Berg website
