Proudly touting a brand as “Made in Japan” may not be the first move most think of when they think of exceptional watchmaking. But Japanese brands have shown, time and time again, that they can deliver equal if not better quality and designs than the most lauded Swiss maisons. Karl-Leimon is building on the foundation established by countless other Japanese brands with its selection of exquisitely crafted “Made in Japan” timepieces. Its latest timepiece collection, the Karl-Leimon Majesty Automatic, demonstrates the unrivaled artisanship of Japanese watches and shows how to deliver true value.
The immediate standout on these models is the vibrant blue dial, which features a subtle luster and a sunray finish, adding an elegance to the sporty design. The dial is an exercise in balance, with applied baton markers symmetrically placed and well-proportioned hands guaranteeing unimpeded legibility. A sloped chapter ring provides a minute scale and is color-matched to the dial. Furthering the Majesty’s versatility, the hands and indices are given generous applications of luminescent paint to provide a bright glow in low-light environments.
The blue iterations of the Majesty Automatic (it’s also available in a blackout PVD case with rose gold-tone dial accents, limited to 99 pieces) is offered in two variants: 3Hand or Open Heart. The 3Hand has a perfectly executed trapezoid date window with a polished frame at 6 o’clock, plus a central seconds hand. The Open Heart provides a bit more of a show. At 6 o’clock, a large aperture offers a view into the inner workings of the movement, showing the balance as it oscillates with each beat. The Open Heart also dispenses with the central seconds hand, allowing the view of the mechanics to be enjoyed with less interruption.
While the dial may be what captures your attention, it’s the case’s finishing and the clear attention to detail that will keep you coming back. Measuring an eminently wearable 40mm and just 9.8mm thick, the watch neither overwhelms nor feels too small on the wrist. An easy wear aided by the flat anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the case plays with finishing and form to create a dynamic experience on the wrist. The round bezel surrounding the cushion-shaped crystal features vertical brushing with a polished bevel. The midcase continues the crisp brushing, with sharp transitions to the refined chamfers running along the edges, including around the case’s flanks. Adding further depth, the octagonal platform between the bezel and the midcase has a brushed top but a subtle polished side.
The watch is completed with a seamlessly integrated stainless steel bracelet, matching the case perfectly. With barely a detectable separation, the tapering H-link bracelet carries the case’s brushing around the wrist, and continues the polished bevel as well. A branded push-button butterfly clasp delivers a thin profile all the way around the wrist. Thanks to quick-release tabs integrated into the case, the bracelet can be quickly swapped out for one of the available rubber straps (a $45 USD add-on), which offer an added level of comfort and style to go with the case’s 50m of water resistance.
The Karl-Leimon Majesty Automatic models are powered by highly regarded and reliable Japanese automatic Miyota 9000 series movements. For the 3HAnd, Karl-Leimon employs the Miyota 9015, while the Open Heart is driven by the Miyota 9029. Both of these calibers feature identical specs: a robust 42-hour power reserve, 28,800 vph, and 24 jewels, with factory accuracy of -10/+30 seconds per day. They feature hand-winding and hacking, ensuring the Majesty Automatic will keep you on time, never having to worry about missing a beat.
The Karl-Leimon Majesty Automatics are sure to be a hit for novice and veteran watch lovers alike. Truly representing their origin and the modern horological zeitgeist, the timepieces deliver impeccable finishing and timeless styling at an unbeatable price point. Building on iconic designs and offering its own twist, Karl-Leimon offers these bold dials in dynamic cases without sacrificing legibility or wearability. For a limited time, the Karl-Leimon Majesty 3Hands Automatic and Open Heart Automatic are both priced at $597 USD, 14% off the future retail price of $695 USD.
