The 1960s saw the pinnacle of space exploration and it was a time when the world watched in wonder as history was made again and again. Luckily for watch enthusiasts, this spark in space exploration also put the spotlight on some incredible timepieces – like the Omega Speedmaster, the Seiko 6139-6002 (later on in the ’70s), and more. One model that’s often overlooked is the Strela/Sekonda 3017 chronograph produced by the first Moscow watch factory and based on the Swiss caliber Venus 150. Today, Univaque watches is introducing their latest, officially licensed modern reinterpretation of this historical watch, the Univaque Strela Cosmoswatch Chronograph on Kickstarter.
As a source of inspiration, Univaque turned to the original Strela and Sekonda models. In contrast to many other reissues on the market, this model has been completely redesigned with modern appointments. While the 3017 chronograph movement is desirable, it’s often difficult to find examples in good condition without having to invest in costly service. That’s why Univaque turned to the TMI modified VK64A MecaQuartz movement, which supports accurate timekeeping and years of low-maintenance, carefree operation. Because of this added durability, the Univaque Strela Cosmoswatch Chronograph makes for the perfect everyday watch in a variety of situations.
Case diameter is also slightly restrained and the watch measures 40mm in diameter and 50mm lug-to-lug – a comfortable size suitable for a range of wrist sizes. Another noteworthy case feature, is that it was designed to proudly showcase the rounded hesalite crystal, which is also complemented by the curved dial design. When paired with the matte dial finishes (all colors) this results in an unmistakably ’60s look that fans of the original can appreciate. Water resistance is rated at 50m and is more than enough for a watch of this kind.
The dial of the Univaque Strela Cosmoswatch Chronograph can be ordered in white, black, or a special edition sunray blue finish. It’s a simple two-register layout with syringe-style hour and minute hands along with a subtle date aperture at 6 o’clock. There’s an internal combined scale for the inner seconds and the tachymeter scale and mirror polished indices. Both the hour and minute hands together with the sub-dial hands feature a coating of C3 Super-LumiNova for low light visibility.
Univaque also includes a genuine leather strap with all models that tapers down from 22mm to 20mm. This is included with all pledge levels and the buckle is also laser-engraved. There has also been significant care taken into designing the screw-down caseback as well. It features an engraving commemorating Voskhod 2, the Soviet space mission during which Alexey Leonov became the first human to conduct extravehicular activity (EVA) during his 12-minute “spacewalk.”
