While Zodiac has had a long and illustrious history as a watchmaker, there is undoubtedly no more iconic nameplate in the brand’s catalog than the Sea Wolf diver. Since reviving the Sea Wolf line several years ago, the brand has both expanded and improved on the line, with today’s Super Sea Wolf series providing the greatest quality and variety in the history of the company. To help celebrate this new golden age for the series, Zodiac has declared 2020 the “Year of the Super Sea Wolf.” The current lineup offers plenty to celebrate, with four distinctive model lines to satisfy a wide variety of dive watch enthusiasts including the Super Sea Wolf 53 Skin, Super Sea Wolf 53 Compression, Super Sea Wolf 68 Saturation, and rare Super Sea Wolf Limited-Edition models.

The Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Skin series is the purest and most elemental expression of Zodiac’s dive watch heritage. Drawing its design cues from the very first Sea Wolf diver released in 1953, this line combines a classic mid-century skin diver look with solidly modern performance. The 40mm stainless steel case maintains the simple lines of the original, reimagined in a bolder size for today. The deeply etched steel diving bezel is a Zodiac hallmark calling back to the Sea Wolf’s earliest iterations, immediately setting the Super Sea Wolf Skin apart from today’s vast field of dive watches. The crystal is made of contemporary scratch-resistant sapphire with anti-reflective coating to reduce glare in changing lighting conditions, while ’round back, a second sapphire crystal in the caseback offers a view of the automatic movement within. Even with this decorative addition, the Super Sea Wolf Skin offers a robust 200 meters of dive-capable water resistance. The dial of the Super Sea Wolf Skin hearkens back to the elegant and evocative styles of the 1950s, with eye-catching elements such as the lumed dauphine hands and broad triangular indices at 12, 6, and 9 o’clock drawing an unmistakable parallel to the original Zodiac Sea Wolf.

The Super Sea Wolf 53 Skin is powered by the STP 1-11 automatic movement, offering a clean 28,800 bph sweep with a 44-hour power reserve.

While the Super Sea Wolf Skin evokes the distinctive style of the original 1953 Sea Wolf, the Super Sea Wolf Compression series pays homage to the evolution of that design throughout the 1960s and beyond with vibrant colors, more streamlined designs, and a more luxurious feel. This particular model, reference ZO9271, takes the same vintage inspired 40mm case layout and adds a layer of luxurious refinement with dashes of gold tone around the bezel and signed crown. The bezel insert continues this two-tone trend with golden markings throughout. While the look may be more opulent and refined, the dependable strength of 200 meters of water resistance remains.

More gold elements abound on the dial, where the applied square indices and ladder hands glitter while maintaining a generous fill of lume for low light capability. The STP 3-13 automatic movement powering the Super Sea Wolf Compression is a refinement of the Super Sea Wolf Skin’s STP 1-11, featuring classical touches like a swan neck regulator assembly. Zodiac creates a cohesive package with this Super Sea Wolf Compression thanks to a two-tone five link bracelet, finished with a signed butterfly clasp.

For those who need extreme underwater performance, Zodiac offers the Super Sea Wolf 68 Saturation. Taking its cues from the first Super Sea Wolf model introduced in 1968, the Super Sea Wolf 68 Saturation offers a much more imposing profile than its stablemates. The 45mm stainless steel case offers an abundance of presence on the wrist while showcasing Zodiac’s distinctive late ‘60s tonneau style. This unmistakable rounded, hooded lug profile is more than just a masculine design exercise — this bold case offers a full 1,000 meters of water resistance to satisfy even the most dedicated diver. The dial of the Super Sea Wolf 68 Saturation cleaves close to the ‘60s original, as well, with the distinctive high-visibility “snake head” minutes hand rendered in high-contrast orange for maximal underwater legibility. The applied indices also receive an orange treatment, balancing the dial design and providing a jolt of color that makes an immediate impact on the wrist.

Powered by the STP 3-13 automatic movement, the Super Sea Wolf 68 Saturation offers chronometer-grade accuracy on land or under the waves. Zodiac pairs this purposeful diver with a suitably tough three-link bracelet finished with a signed locking clasp.

Zodiac also caters to the true connoisseur with the Super Sea Wolf collection, offering distinctive limited edition variants of its models for the collector in search of the unique. One of the most striking of these pieces is the Super Sea Wolf 68 Saturation x Andy Mann Limited Edition, restricted to only 182 examples. Designed in collaboration with world-famous marine wildlife photographer Andy Mann, the watch combines the classic style of the Super Sea Wolf 68 Saturation with the power and grace of the oceanic white-tip shark. To this end, the unique bezel insert combines a rich oceanic blue with bright contrasting orange accents, flanking a brushed dial surface with a gradient pattern inspired by the filtering of sunlight down from the ocean’s surface.

The white-tip shark’s titular fin makes an appearance as a unique and evocative applied marker at 12 o’clock, while a sharply etched caseback displays another white-tip shark based on one of Mann’s own photographs. Like the production Super Sea Wolf 68 Saturation, this striking limited edition is powered by a COSC-certified STP 3-13 automatic movement for exceptional accuracy. In keeping with a design meant to handle any challenge the ocean may present, this limited edition is delivered with a versatile trio of straps. These include a three link stainless steel bracelet, a navy blue tropic rubber strap, and a signed Velcro strap in brilliant ocean blue.

These four models are only a small selection of the array of Super Sea Wolf variants currently available through Zodiac authorized dealers. More than just one of the earliest consumer dive watches available, the Super Sea Wolf line has grown into a selection that can satisfy any enthusiast’s tastes. As Zodiac dives into the “Year of the Super Sea Wolf,” this lineup is sure to grow even more robust.  For more information on these and other Super Sea Wolf models, please visit Zodiac’s website.
