The new Seiko X Giugiaro Spirit Smart "Ripley Reissue" SCED035 and SCED037 watches lack the extra pusher and crown on the left of the case, as the crown is likely hidden under the lug structure. This gives the watch cases a cleaner look, but it is hard not to want the watches to be the exact same as the original 1983 models that ended up in Aliens. The case for these new watches is coated steel in either the matte gray or the matte black and is water resistant to 100 meters.
I want to credit WatchUSeek on this post for the stills from Aliens with Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley character wearing the Seiko 7A28 watch in various parts of Aliens. You can view the post there for more images. The point is that the watch was in all parts of the movie and that it was prominently featured, which adds additional nerd appeal. Seriously, though, is this like the only time in history that a woman made a men's watch popular while still looking bad-ass?
Someday, I would love to own the original Seiko 7A28-7000 watch as a collector's item, but it would be hard, as my inclination would be to wear it. With that said, these two new limited edition Seiko X Giugiaro Spirit Smart re-issues will make better daily-wear timepieces, as the originals are worth in the thousands right now (if not more) - and with not-crazy prices, these new models will be better for daily wear. Then again, they are limited editions as well. I am pretty sure that I would like to get them both just because I've been so into the original model, and now that I got the chance to wear the real thing, I know that I need to wear this design on my wrist from time to time. There is no other reason I can fathom that the same day I see this rare Seiko Ripley watch in person, I also learn about the new limited edition re-issue models.
The Seiko X Giugiaro Design Spirit Smart SCED035 (gray) and SCED037 (black) watches are each limited to 3,000 pieces with a price of 32,000 JPY (currently about $260) and 36,000 JPY (currently about $295), respectively. seikowatches.com
