While classic blue might be the official color of 2020, green dials continue to be this year’s great luxury watch trend, and German brand Glashütte Original has announced a forest green dial variant of its signature PanoMaticLunar moonphase watch as part of its 2020 novelty announcements. While the 40mm stainless steel form should be familiar to the brand’s faithful, a simple change of dial color has helped the Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar in forest green to feel substantially more contemporary than some of its stablemates. The brand has gone to impressive lengths to create its ideal degradè effect with the color, creating each dial with a three-step process. Firstly, the entire surface of the dial is coated in a layer of galvanic nickel, followed by a coat of opaque black lacquer carefully sprayed around the edge. Finally, the forest green color is sprayed on in multiple transparent layers to allow the brightness of the nickel to shine through and contrast with the black edges. With this natural green tone combined with steel hands, indices, and complications, the overall effect is far less ostentatious and more modern, without giving up any of the PanoMaticLunar’s upright Germanic design precision. The tobacco brown of the strap helps to reinforce the naturalistic tone, but alligator rather than calfskin feels left-field with the softer matte texture of nubuck.

With this latest addition to the cornerstone PanoMaticLunar line, Glashütte Original further cements its current foray into adventurous dial colors. With green as the color of the moment in watchmaking, this stands out as one of the most refined offerings of the current trend.
