Based in the Jura mountains of Switzerland, Louis Erard is an independent brand renowned for its approachable priced mechanical watches, many of which feature original, thoughtful designs. The brand’s limited edition regulators, in particular, have recently gained quite the following among the watch collecting community, with most pieces selling out shortly after their launch.

The regulator is an interesting and arguably under-represented dial configuration. Its design is marked by one large hand in the center indicating the minutes, with the hours and seconds occupying separate subdials. This layout is a welcome alternative to traditional dial designs, offering a novel yet legible approach to time-telling.

Following the success of recent collaborations with Alain Silberstein, Vianney Halter, and atelier oï, Louis Erard’s most recent regulator is a collaboration with independent watch “artist” Romaric André, AKA seconde/seconde/. André is known for his custom, artful modifications to vintage watches. His signature design trait involves replacing one of the hands with a custom piece that adds gamesome, youthful energy to the watch. As one would expect, Le Régulateur Louis Erard x seconde/seconde/ is unique and playful in premise, taking its inspiration from the dreaded “404 Error” or “broken link” Internet landing page.

A limited edition of just 178 pieces, the watch features a 42 mm mirror-polished stainless steel case with a thickness of 12.25 mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of 49.6 mm. The dial is a light metallic silver, with concentric circles applied to the hour and second subdials. The indices are applied silver. Of course, the main talking point here is seconde/seconde/’s signature minute hand.

The blue rectangular bar-shaped minute hand features the numbers “404” stamped in a retro digital typeface on one side. At the three o’clock marker, the word “ERROR” appears on a blue plaque where “Erard” would normally appear. Thus, the logo reads “Louis ERROR” rather than “Louis Erard,” serving as a welcome and seldom-seen dose of self-mockery by a Swiss watch brand. Once every 60 minutes, the minute hand and logo align to form the message, “404 ERROR.”

Powering Le Régulateur Louis Erard x seconde/seconde/ is a reliable Sellita SW266-1, which beats at 28,800 VPH and has a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. The movement features a custom open-worked oscillating weight that is marked with the Louis Erard symbol and can be viewed through a sapphire caseback. Completing the look is a 22 mm brown nubuck strap with tone-on-tone stitching and quick-release spring bars, enabling easy strap changes.

A fun, thought-provoking piece that will appeal to both modern art collectors and watch enthusiasts, the Le Régulateur Louis Erard x seconde/seconde/, or “Louis Error,”  is a reminder that watches are not only functional — they’re a form of wearable art. This limited edition of 178 pieces is available for CHF 2,404. Learn more here.
