The inspiration for watches vary from designer to designer. From aviation to cars; designers can struggle to stay unique. The TACS Automatic Vintage Lens has done just that. At TACS, we have taken the look and feel of the camera and combined it with a sophisticated and sleek Japanese look. A sturdy-looking watch, it is perfect for adventurous photographers, both amateur and professional alike. Although new, unique, possibly even unusual, the watch screams taste and sophistication. Partially inspired by the designer’s love of Zen philosophy, the watch takes in the everyday and turns it into something extraordinary.

Although a one-of-a-kind item, the TACS Automatic Vintage Lens is not a novelty item, but is extremely functional and effective. Combining the sturdy look of a camera with a vintage gold plated case and automatic movement, the TACS Automatic Vintage Lens watch is a perfect timepiece for any photographer on the go. With its Miyota 82S0 movement and sturdy leather straps manufactured by Horween, the same company that makes basketballs for the NBA. It can also fit the lifestyle of any rough-and-tumble adventurer. At prices starting at $429 for the early bird special at Kickstarter, the TACS Automatic Vintage Lens is priced very moderately for such a fine timepiece.

The case is 47mm of gold plated stainless steel giving it the look of a sturdy camera body. With a leather cap resembling old school camera gear covering it, and a rotating bezel that resembles the focus ring around a camera lens, the TACS Automatic Vintage Lens certainly has a unique feel to it. It is reminiscent of old analog cameras and reminds one of simpler times. The scratch-resistant sapphire glass gives the watch face a nice fish eye effect that furthers the illusion that you are looking into a camera lens. The watch lacks markers and indices, but instead uses numbers that resemble the aperture and focal lengths of a camera, which may seem odd to some, but would make photographers smile with its distinctness. The push-pull crown juts out slightly but does not ruin the overall aesthetic of the watch and is in keeping with the camera look.

The case back reveals the watch’s skeleton design. It offers you a beautiful glimpse into the gold plated movement and offers you a look into the complex work that we put into it. Water-resistant up to 100m, this watch was designed for those who live an adventurous lifestyle.

The movement is the Japanese Miyota 82S0. A reliable and often used movement these days. It beats at 21600bph and runs on 21 jewels, making it a good choice for the price. Being a Japanese company, the designer understandably went with a Japanese movement. It gets the job done and is accurate with 40-plus hours of power reserve.

The dial and hands are minimalistic. The overall goal of making the watch as much like a camera lens as possible is achieved with this look. Looking at this convincing replica of a camera lens makes you feel as though you are getting ready for a picture.

Although the black and gold hands look elegant, against the black backdrop they can be a little difficult to read with the lack of contrast; however, the fisheye effect offsets that a bit with a slight magnifying effect. That said, the aperture numbers and rotating bezel all add to the camera theme. Again, the details make up for it, giving the TACS Automatic Vintage Lens a very authentic and classic look.

Although the 47mm case can seem intimidating and bulky, the watch is actually a great fit on the wrist. The genuine leather strap makes it an ideal watch for those interested in a personal watch. It is a thick strap that will wear with age giving it personality and coupled with the leather lens cap, gives it a very personal and rugged feel. Although the leather strap could become a little hot in the summer months.

Overall, it fits the wrist well and feels good to wear. It is ultimately a cool watch to wear and definitely feels at home along with my camera bag.

The packaging is one of those personal touches that just sweetens the pot. You are given a wooden collectors box with three tiers including an SD card holder for the photographer on the go. The other two tiers are custom designed for the watch cap and the watch itself, giving you an all-around great package and timepiece that will be as timeless as a photograph.
