The latest and darkest addition to our ever-growing collection of horological art prints is the first over an all-black background! When Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin wore his Omega Speedmaster as he joined Armstrong on the lunar surface on July 20th, 1969, he made it the first watch ever worn on the moon. Deservedly called the Moonwatch ever since by watch enthusiasts the world over, aBlogtoWatch Store’s featured watch artist, Tamás Fehér, chose to pay painstaking tribute to this milestone in the history of humankind and, indeed, horology. Read on to learn more about the production process.
Available in easy-to-frame A3 (30-by-42 centimeters), B2 (50-by-70 centimeters) and B1 (70-by-100 centimeters) sized prints of exceptional quality, you may get your Art Tribute To The Moonwatch print from the aBlogtoWatch Store for $199 and $249, respectively, all with fixed-rate $15 FedEx Priority Shipping to just about every country in the world.
The drawing process is a long and arduous one that cannot be expedited. It has taken immense effort, patience, and dexterity to create, with charcoal, the space black background on which the watch and the crescent moon are displayed. Drawing up in white over a black sheet of paper would make for the obvious decision, but Tamás prefers to operate with the whiteness and texture of the paper, something that is utterly lost when replacing those with white pencils. And so, the painstaking work of applying and shading the background had to be undertaken.
The entire drawing that serves as the base for our affordable prints took about 120 hours of desk-time to realize.
The final effect, we hope you’ll agree, is that of an eye-catching, tasteful work of hand-drawn horological art. The goal was to blend the much-loved Speedmaster Moonwatch and the Earth’s only natural satellite, the moon, illustrating just how well the two happen to go together, not only historically, but also visually. Whether you own a modern or vintage Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, our intention was to offer to you a larger-than-life, highly impressive tribute to it.
Accurate to extremely fine details such as the characteristic patination of the black bezel, the tiniest grooves within the subdials, and the three-dimensionality of the craters of the moon, Tamás’s art brings this spectacular timepiece — and the scene of its most memorable performance — to an immense scale for unrivaled appreciation.
